Rev,that .460 is a gentle giant with the right handloads. Um...no.

You know, Roy Weatherby designed his stocks so those things could not be affixed to the stock!

Once you fire it, the recoil will make the actual animal attack seem much less traumatic...

Odd you mention that Patrick...first time I shot even the puny .416 Rigby my first thought was that it would be no good for charging dangerous game.... All I could see were little stars and tweety birds...

I shot a .577 double. Once. After a while I commented to folks that if an elephant was charging me, and the rifle was laying in front of me, I'd have to think about it... I've shot my .475 Turnbull & .458 off the bench - both with 500gr full-house loads - and it was not fun, but not horrible. The .475 only weighs about 9lbs, 2oz with scope. I think my recoil limit is somewhere between .475 & .577 You can get 350gr TTSX for a .416; I think those would have to be fine for anything except elephant.

The last place I want to shoot a big bore is off a bench, standing off of sticks or off hand makes heavy recoil much more tolerable. Rio7

Sometimes you just gotta go with your big rifle.

Bell certainly thought so. I'm about half way through "Karamojo Safari" again. It was good enough for 12,000 pound elephant; it's certainly good enough for 300 pound pigs.

If you read his Appendix on Rifles and shooting in "Bell of Africa" IIRC.... it tells you pretty much everything you need to know about shooting a big game rifle...

If I ever get a chance to head to the Mother Land, I'll put a bit of meat on the fire with it in your honor.
