I didn't draw my mule deer tag so I'm going to the keys from sept 29-oct 6. I want to do some fishing and I've never been there before. Anyone with any recommendations?

This is my favorite place on earth! Yeah I hunt for a living, but that's work. My passion is fishing and there is no place better on earth then the Keys! I fish there every year, sometimes twice!

My best success has been on the gulf side, I much prefer fish that run a great distance away, compared to running straight down into the deep. The Gulf side is shallow, most places well under 20 foot and at low tide, many areas near the everglades are only a few feet.

You should PM me about the guides there. I have a couple that are outstanding and a couple I can protect you from ever getting hooked up with. No sure what type of fishing you're interested in. I can suggest blacktip sharks for the biggest bang for your buck. You can catch many per day and they will run 100 yards multiple times on properly sized spinning gear ( it's what we use)

They also come out of the water frequently. I've had them jump 4-6 times completely out of the water for a 6 foot 80-100 lb fish! They are amazing to feel on the line!

I can also share with you a good place to stay that is reasonably priced and centrally located. You're in for the time of your life fishing in the keys!

Dang, I made reservations for a place and fishing trip before I saw your reply. Is the fishing ok the first of October?

Peak of hurricane season guess you roll the dice, one storm knocks out the fishing for a while until the churned up water settles down.

I lived and also guided in the Marathon area. Id suggest you
hire a guide, and there would be none better in the central
keys than Buddy Lapointe, for bay and inshore, who charters under the name Fishin Buddy out of Grassey key just above Marathon. The Flamingo motel is in the same area and offers some efficiency as well as the regular units at good rates. The Jolly Rodger campground is right next to it.

Buddy is the king of inshore fishing guides if you don't have a brilliant time with him then nobody else will be catching anything either.

He is gentle kind patient, polite and you can feel comfortable with a wife or kids. I've never heard an off color or rude comment from him in over a decade of annual fishing trips with him.
