I was in Saskatchewan recently on a big game hunt & heard my guide mention that he trapped. I stated that in my misspent youth I had done a bit with an older man but would like to go on one of those trapping trips I had seen advertised. I killed out early & my guide offered to take me with him & his sons to trap rats & beaver on a frozen lake. I took photos & even got a export permit to bring back beaver pelts. They had just trapped a big black wolf & sold him to another hunter in camp. From rats alone these teens made about $100 each for the two days. When we finished with the first sets & started to check traps rats were in the traps. Rat houses & beaver huts were everywhere. What a blast.I obtained export papers for the beavers & am having my taxidermist tan them. I am sending copies of photos & knives to the guides sons. Of course, I gave the guide an extra tip. We also visited a trapper that is president of providencial trapping association where rats, beavers, & a few wolf & lynx were being skinned & prepared. Traps, baskets, stretchers, bait, everything to make a real trapper happy was on display. PETA would have had a great time there.

Near Love on a private ranch. We trapped on a frozen lake on the owners property. Don't believe it had ever seen a trapper before based on our success. The kids were very careful to leave juvenile & some rats so population could rebuild in future. At 15 & 16 they were already practising conservation. I was very impressed. I am sure their dad had to be also. You must enjoy your time in Saskatchewan. I plan a future trip to fish for pike with my wife. A video was made of my elk hunt but thats another story.

I used to shoot beavers in the creek behind our place all the time. One day I got 12 of the suckers. One of them weighed in at 90 lbs on our bathroom scale.

For fishing big pike it's hard to beat northern Sask. Look up some of my posts in the fishing section for some pictures...

Bathroom scales are notoriously inaccurate. At least my wife says so... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Sounds like the story of the "Attack Beaver". Bet they would have made a dandy blanket or hat.
