Hello all, I recently purchased a Marlin XT-17V, and was looking for a higher-power, inexpensive scope for it. I believe I have it narrowed down to 3 candidates, but was hoping some of you had actual experience with any of these. BTW I want to mount it on medium height rings, so that's why none are 50mm objectives.
Tasco Target/Varmint 6-24x40- This is the only one I have handled personally, and was quite impressed with the clarity considering the price. Compared it side by side with a BSA Sweet 17, and the Tasco looked superior to my eyes.
Simmons 44Mag 6-24x44- I have handled one of these in 4-12 power, and was pretty impressed by it. Have not been able to get one of the 6-24 in my hands though. This one had adjustable parallax on the side, and I really favor that, and it can be mounted lower than an A/O on the Bell.
Konus KonusPro 6-24x44- haven't handled this one either. Have looked through a few other Konus before, and I didn't think they looked bad. The A/O on the 44mm bell might mean it would need high rings though.
I know I'll, get the whole "pay more for your glass" spiel, and I typically agree. For my higher powered stuff, I am a Leopold/Weaver/Vortex junkie. But this is just a "fun gun." I intend to punch paper with it, and occasionally take it out and pop some squirrels and rabbits. I have no intentions of dropping it out of a tree, throwing it out my vehicle, or playing lawn darts with it, so the everlasting durability I demand with the scopes I put on my high power hunting rifles just isn't there.
Thanks!

Its more money than the others but worlds better.

Ajd3530: The answer to your inquiry is... the Weaver V-16! I have recommended this scope to at least a dozen folks and all of them have been VERY satisfied with these on their 17 HMR Rifles! I actually prefer the Weaver V-16 with fine cross hair and fine dot reticle - and use this set up exclusively for my main Ground Squirrel Hunting Rifles. I do have two other Weaver V-16's with the Du-Plex style reticles and they work well also - especially when running game is pursued. Go with a Weaver V-16 - you won't be disappointed. The V16's are nice but if your budget is definitely in line with the scopes you listed:
Make sure the reticle is thin enough for your purpose. Many of the newer Tasco's I have looked at are pretty thick.
I have a Simmons 6-21 44Mag that looks nice, mil-dot reticle is nice, side focus is a plus and glass is fairly bright. However, the parallax/focus does not meet at the same point for my eyes. I would take a comparable BSA Contender or Platinum series before this scope. Of course, this is only a sample of one.
The 44mm Konus has a 59mm objective bell. Measure carefully if you plan to use medium rings.
If you can get by with less magnification, a Mueller APV 4.5-14x40 is around the same price with a bit better glass.
Check out the 6.5-20x44 Bushnell Custom Gold at Natchezss.com for $109.99. Same as a Weaver 40/44. Objective bell is 58mm but a lot more scope than any that I listed above

Nikko Stirling Nighteater is my choice. Designed for the Australian market. Great lense quality for a reasonable price. They will never disappoint you. I've got several mounted to my contender barrels.

I picked up a Tasco World Class 4 x 16 for mine from Optics Planet for like $75.... its been more than enough for the caliber and performed well out to 200 yds, the reticle is handy....
mounted a 6 x 24 on top, but thought it was overkill...

My CZ452 American 17HMR is currently wearing an older Bushnell Legend (not Ultra HD) 5-15 mil dot that I picked up here on the fire a couple years back. Some of the better glass that I have at a fraction of the price. Focus is very forgiving which is nice if a quick shot is needed at an unexpected distance. 15x is sufficient for me on any vermin within rimfire range.

AJD, I opted for a Burris Timberline 4.5-14 as it's small and fit the rifle size and my needs well. If you want to try a Tasco 4-16AO, send a PM, I won't be using it.
