If all that were entailed in making the conversion was a simple parts swap I'd be OK with it. But since the conversion involves altering the feed rails which can sometimes be problematic I would tend not to recommend attempting the conversion.

The action for 308 might have wider rails. The shoulder diameter of the 308 is .454. The shoulder diameter of the 30-06 is .441. I believe (unless my memory is not correct on this) that the 308 shoulder was made wider so one at the time would not chamber and fire the 308 in a 30-06. I could also be that only the left rail was a different size and the right rail still holds. Just my 2 cents of input and hope you find it useful.
