What are you doing with it?

got a old Westernfield (Heym) Mauser that won't close on my reloads. Factory is fine. Go gauge won't close all the way either. Just want to clean it up a bit

Maybe you should try and re-size those reloads. You are running the risk of getting excess headspace on the old girl. It may not matter to you but the nesxt guy???

Are your reloads from fireformed brass or FL sized?

I full length size them. They work well in several other 06's I have. Really frustrating, I can't figure out what is happening. When I force it closed on a reload it leaves a mark on the bullet. They are seated to spec. When u seat them deeper than spec they work.

If factory rounds close fine, I would be more tempted to find the lands and seat to them rather than spec - as opposed to cleaning up the chamber with a reamer.

Obviously, you should ensure there is no debris or buildup at the throat either.


When I chambered my 222, I had very little throat at all, and was able to kiss the lands at minimum OAL, and realized a small pressure and velocity increase because of it. I used that to my advantage.

Oh, and the old girl is as pristine as they come.

There are bunches of people on this very site that worry incessantly about not being able to reach the lands. Here you have the "ideal" in hand and you're looking to get rid of it.

Seems to me that it's a simple matter of sizing and seating the cartridges to fit that particular rifle. No big deal. So what if said cartridges won't fit any other .30-06 you have? Consider yourself lucky those other ones share the same ammo. Just keep the loads for this one segregated from the rest. I too own multiple '06's and it really is no big deal to do so. This isn't an infantry squad in which all the guns must function with the same ammo.

There's enough tolerances built into the specs for a .30-06 chamber that it is a given that no two are exactly alike. Add to that a gun builder's thoughts on what constitutes a proper throat/leade and it's anybody's guess what has to be done to craft ammo custom tailored to fit.

I have several 06 reamers...I would loan you one but sounds like a short throat.. I try to set up a chamber to feel the go gauge or just a tad more..

I think before you recut the chamber set the bullets back some and see if that works..

With a tad shorter chamber watch trim length..the neck may need to be shortened also....

Could be the chamber is a wee bit too tight. Factories resharpen reamers and they tell me that can happen if the reamer is sharpened one time too many. Factory cases are squeezed down a little extra so they will work in everything.

If that's the case should be a quick touch with a reamer most gunsmiths should have or maybe try small base dies. A chamber cast would pinpoint the problem but if you're using the GO gauge properly don't think I'd bother.

You need a throater, not a reamer.
