This post isn't really about elk, but I'm thinking the elk hunters might have the best info...

I've drawn an early season rifle bear tag in unit 61, and I thought I'd see if you guys have any pointers. I spend a lot of time in unit 62, but must confess that I am not very knowledgeable about where to start looking in 61. I did spend some time scouting the south end of the unit this weekend, and located a couple decent choke cherry thickets, but it's hard to say if they'll be any good this fall.

Also, if anyone has an archery or muzzy elk tag this year, and would be interested in sharing info (elk info for bear info during the hunt) I'd be more than willing to do so.

I got that same tag, I'd be interested in anyone who's willing to share info. on the location of gutpiles.

it's been 3 years since I archery elk hunted 61, and two years since I was there helping a friend try to get his archery elk, BUT I saw a few bears each time north of Hanks Valley Road, east of the Little Red canyon. Seemed like they really liked the oaks, and there are several small ponds in the area too.

I spent the weekend around windy point and the tongue. I saw no bear sign. Talked with a local outfitter who thought they were still down eating piñon nuts.
