Came across this photo and could not remember if I posted it for those here. If I did please ignore.

If you haven't seen it, the top stock is an Edge shell with Edge fill. The bottom stock is an Edge shell with Magnum fill.

Pretty cool.

Enjoy. smile

Cool [bleep].

I wonder what the difference between the two fill materials is. I would think McMillan would like the materials to be as common as possible to be efficient/save money, and I would also expect each material to have a standardized amount of the stronger/heavier components so they could control weights.

Just a guess though. Maybe one day I'll be able to tour the McMillan facility.

bob I really don't know the weight differences...(?)

I'm sure there is "some".

I think the advantages might be tailoring to get a balance between the lightest stock and a rifle that shoots well, which can be a problem sometimes if you use (say)an Edge/Edge combo with a 300 Weatherby. Might shoot better with the Magnum fill.

Right now, I only have Edge/Edge on two rifles. I am told my 7mm Mashburn is at the upper limits of recoil for an Edge/Edge.

Just nice to know a guy can mix and match with McMillan.

Thanks Bob and P76.

No doubt they're a great product and the tailoring they do makes them all the more attractive.

Why would one choose the Edge "shell" versus the regular fiberglass method, if one is not going for lightweight anyway by using magnum fill?

Isn't the fiberglass gelcoat stock actually stronger?

I dunno.

Have not tried all these options.

But lets say I want a light 300 Win Mag. I might choose an Edge shell with standard or magnum fill just to make sure it shoots well while giving me the lightest possible stock.

You talk to McMillan and try it out

The top photo looks what came with my Sako Classic standard weight stock, pretty much foam. Mcmillan mixes a composite of resin which looks like putty when they are done and force that into the foreend and other areas that are later machined. I bet that is what the magnum fill is .

I've had edge construction, standard fill, magnum fill, sniper fill and solid fill. Quite cool of McMillan to allow such options to fit the consumer's needs. I want to say magnum fill (through the action area) added about 5oz or so above standard fill, while sniper fill also continued through the grip and butt and added about 10oz. Solid pour added a full pound or better.

JPro: I had no idea they offered all those other fill types. Interesting.

Great that they offer all those options. Any one know the lead time right now? Guess I'll find out. Wish it was like 4 weeks, last was 7 months. For a synthetic stock no less.

Bob, lead time is way down down. I got one almost two years ago in four months flat, and I guess they've gotten quite a bit faster since then.

I didn't think you were a synthetic stock guy..... whistle

Been using synthetics since I got my first one around 1980 or so.

I've had all those myself, plus had a solid pour with 5 pounds of lead added to the butt area of one. They don't offer that option anymore due to the lead police.

Can they make the standard fiberglass gelcoat exterior with a lightweight "edge" fill?

To me, that would be the best of both worlds.
