If it was me I'd run a faster twist than that, no downside to it. That is a slow twist for a 7mm caliber cartridge.

why the slow twist barrel on a cal that does its best with a 160 gr bullet or heavier?

The 1980 model Winchester M-70 FW in 7X57 was twisted 1/8 3/4,can't recall reading on the fire anyone having accuracy issues with the 140/150 bullets. Now the long throats is a separate issue.

No cheek piece, fore end tip, iron sights and engraving.

The twist rate is what I want for the 140 gr Nosler & Sierra bullets.

Ken,

Talk to MuleDeer about setting up a 7x57 to shoot 140 grain bullets. I don't recall all the details but he was not completely happy with the custom rifle he had built.

Don't know the twist on his barrel, but I believe he had it reamed for a short throat.

Have two other 7mm Mausers and use 160's in those. This one will be for the 140 gr Nosler Partition and Sierra.

Ken,

Interesting project.

Seems you're convinced eleven twist will shoot 140's better than std. 7x57 twist.

Fill us in on the decision process.

I've got one of those 1980 models. I have yet to find a bullet weight it does not like.
I prefer the 140 Partition, for Deer, though.

Well geez...putting a slow twist on a 7x57 is like getting a date with Heidi Klum and asking to go out with her ugly sister instead....

( Or if theres a .270 involved...her ugly brother...)

If its gonna be a classic design, 7x57 is what to go with. The .338-06 is great...but really suited for SS/Syn.

Classic cartridges belong in classic guns...

Hi elkthunternm,

Of course its your decision and money. I, and I presume, all others who are saying a 1:11" is unnecesarily slow twist even for a 140 grs bullets in a 7x57, are trying to colaborate with you. Nothing else...
To me, having used the 7x57 in 3 rifles since 1972, 1:11" twist is in the edge, as I said, even for 140 grs bullets.

Anyway, good luck!

Sure hope that twist rate still works for you when the Feds outlaw lead.

Just sayin'

Gonna be a nice rifle for sure though.

While your waiting find a classic ready made!

The Brno 21H's came in 7.0 and are a mauser type.

Mine has a 21" bbl. and the factory scope mount.

I have one in Stainless M70 Classic and one not a 03A3, but it isn't blue either. I picked up the 03A3 used and I'd do some things a little different if I were building it. However, it got my feet wet with the cartridge and I've enjoyed it ever since. I consider .338-06 a classic cartridge

.338-06 is a nice rebore project for a tired '06 with enough steel in the tube to not end up too thin.

Less costly than a new barrel and they shoot pretty good.

When I had my Montana rebarreled by Pacnor I had them chamber in 7mm-08 with a 1 in 9". It shoots 120's very well. I finally decided to try some 162's in it for reduced wind drift, and I'm glad I have the faster twist.

If'n I was gonna build a 7-6.8 Ingwe, I'd also suggest a one in 9", but hey it's your rifle grin

I just took every of a custom 275 Rigby with a 1:10 twist and it will cloverleaf 140gr Sierra's. I went with a classic stalking rifle theme. Pics are on this thread under a stalking rifle and on the Winchester collector forum.

I bet it will turn out nicely. Roy builds a really well balanced hunting rifle. I saw a 7x57 that he built on an early commercial Oberndorf that was incredible.

Mention custom 7x57's and I always think of this one. It was built by Jaeger in Jenkinstown, PA, on one of PO Ackley's left hand Mauser actions. P.O. had 150 RH and 50 LH made up a number of years ago, at a factory in Japan - according to DeHaas' book.

Despite the wrong handed bolt, I nearly kept it anyway. I finally sold it for a nice profit to a collector of left hand Mausers, who was utterly delighted to have it.
