Yes indeed he goes bear hunting with a switch!! Even for a pro that has to get the Adrenalin flowing. Good job. If a 9mm will do that imagine what 10mm with hard cast or super 45 with hard cast would do!! But you have to still shoot and hit the correct spots. Cheers NC

Wow! and with a 9mm no less. Shows that Phil does indeed know a thing or two about shot placement. But I would wager some serious money that he's gonna go back to carrying that S&W 629 44 Mag. that he said was what he usually carried in the event of something like that happening. If it were me I'd also think about wearing adult diapers in bear country.

Ammo/bullets of today makes this possible. I can see the 9 as a better scalpel due to recoil of larger calibers. I don't have one. Gonna fix that.

I have no doubt he is at least a bad azz. I have 0 experience with brown bears, but an 8 shot 9mm would have to be way down my list of backup guns to carry fishing. I felt kind of naked fishing in Alaska with a 338 Win Magnum on my shoulder. They probably heard me going through the brush to get to the stream in Anchorage. "Bad azz" is not giving the man enough credibility...

Guess it's true about that ammo/bullets of today stuff. Phil's Buffalo Bore load was 147 gr. hard cast rated at 1100 fps. My Glock 19 9mm occasional carry gun usually has Wolf Gold 147 gr. JHP's in it and they shocked me the first time I chronographed 'em; as they were averaging just over 1500 fps over a Shooting Chrony. Thought maybe my Chrony had something wrong with it but then I fired some 38 Special handloads of known velocity from a Ruger Blackhawk over it and they checked out O.K.. So now I feel better about having those 147 gr. rounds in the Glock, but not good enough to feel comfy about bear defense with it. I'll leave that to the pros.

It would be interesting to know if the bullets failed to penetrate sufficiently. He mentions a first shot to the neck, I'd wonder if the 9mm slugs failed to break bones. If so a 275gr hardcast from a .44 might have busted the neck and stopped him on the first shot.

Good shot placement is key but a more appropriate caliber would be a better choice when you have clients depending on you.
I sue hope lesser skilled folks don't take this as 9mm is now a bear gun.

Altering ones choice of weapon due to different personalities of something with such potential seems odd.
