Nice pictures, Sammo. I've done a few wheat harvests and I don't recall it looking so pretty.

Sam; Thanks for the photos, it's always grand memories for me for sure and you know I appreciate them.
Do you folks desiccate in order to straight cut?
I believe my brother does mostly now when they're not swathing.
They are about a week off of starting and as they're maybe 5½ hours north of you that makes sense.
My goodness the new combines are huge aren't they? In all respects too - head, hopper capacity - they just look huge compared to say a Massey 760 or even a Gleaner N7 that was big for the times.
Thanks again Sam, all the best to you all this harvest season and good luck on your hunts too.

Farmers......never talked to one that wasn't bitching about the price of wheat/peas/the weather.....yet somehow they all seem to have a brand new $40,000 pick up truck...... Purdy pix.....hope you don't have to hock your camera to cover your losses on the wheat....

Dwayne, people down here desiccate pulse crops to even up maturation and weeds. For wheat we just pre-plant spray and then spray again for weeds before the wheat starts making heads.
Unless you have a bunch of kochia and Russian thistle no need for spray(on wheat) this time of year in our area.
Charlie, I know exactly what you're talking about......grin

Blu, we had a half section that got thrashed by hail when it was in the boot and still averaged right at 40 bushel/acre.
Non hail crop is averaging 40-60 bushels(dryland).
Low pro wheat this year.
Right around 12-13% so far.
Bigfish, I figured the combiners would perk up with some Silver Bullets. Turns out they went for the Miller Lites....

How many loaves of bread is that? I don't know. But it's good to see that America will not be starving this winter! That's never far from my thoughts when I get to drive through farm land. I know I don't do a thing to provide the food I eat -- the health of those crops, and livestock, and the farm economy are my prospects to keep my belly full. God bless our farmers. (At least the ones that won't vote for Hillary!)

When I was a young teenager during the Summers, I hired on at the CO-OP grain elevators in Grandfield, Oklahoma to work throughout the wheat harvest. Seven days a week. I never had time to spend any money because I was always workin'. But it allowed a youngster like me to learn a little, and bank a little more, during those Summer months. I learned immediately that I didn't want nuthin' to do with farmin' for a livin'.
Every day on this side of the ground is a win.

Our yields are running a little higher than that. Our DNS has been around 85, red winter has been right around 100, and white winter has been any where from 100 to 138, weights have run anywhere 62 to 65 lbs and protein on the white has been around 8% while the red has been around 12%. All dry land. We have about 6 days left, been at it for about 45 days so far.

Charlie, I know exactly what you're talking about......grin Okay Sam-so educate one who know's not what you do. Do you spray fields that size by tractor, or by crop duster? Beautiful pics, by the way.
