Walmart is closing out the RAR. They have them for 199.00 right now. Just bought a 243. Would have bought more but that was all they had. They said they thought the sale was good at all Walmarts that carry firearms.

Nice! Not in Portland area
All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

I was going to use it for a donor but I shot it one weekend....add another 30-06 to the pile It then ended up with dual dove tails, V3 glass and a 1st Gen Ti stock. I sold the factory stock for $75 and the cheap scope and mounts for $50 That rig with 180's made the trip out west with me last fall looking to notch my elk tag.

Ask your walmart to scan the barcode on the box. Some of the stores didn't know about the pricing.

Why would they close them out. That rifle has Walmart written all over it.
I probably hit more elk with a pickup than you have with a rifle. I have yet to see anyone claim Leupold has never had to fix an optic. I know I have sent a few back. 2 MK 6s, a VX-6, and 3 VX-111s.

TnBigBore, the $299 ($249) after rebate) 1895 I just bought is every bit as nice as the two JM 1895's I have owned. The inletting in the wood is more precise than my 1894 JM. I know it's fun to run down "Remlin" but the growing pains are largely gone and Remington is turning out good Marlins these days.
I did go back and get an American 243 for $199.

I will take your word for it on the Remlins. I have handled several dozen since the take over including a few made this year. While the fit and finish does seem a bit better, the actions still seemed gritty and there were way too many sharp edges on the wood to suit me.
I would not mind picking up a Ruger American for $199 though.

I hit three WalMarts today and all were out of the Ruger Americans. I intended it as a Christmas present since I am left-handed and wouldn't use it, but it was too good a deal not to try for.

Bargain: Something you don't need at a price you can't resist.
Just got a non-resident VA hunting license for about the same money. That's going to just about double my deer hunting opportunities this year using the rifles I already have. I also laid in a bunch of Nosler blems in three calibers for an average of less than .20 apiece. An old man on a fixed income's gotta get the most bang for his bucks.
Glad to see the rest of you getting a deal though.
What fresh Hell is this?

If anyone can find a 1895 45/70 and can buy it for $299, I will pay for the gun and the shipping to purchase it for me. I cannot find one around me anywhere. PM me with any details. I talked to one walmart counter guy who said he had a guy come in and buy their last two. They were the 4th and 5th he bought in the last 24 hours. No wonder I can't find one.

So one of our local WM's has both the '06 and .243 in stock. How do these things function and shoot? Not usually a fan of lightweight rifles, and these feel pretty light to me. I could probably get over most shortcomings at that price, except for accuracy issues I guess.

Our local WM is out of the $199 RARs, but they have Savage B-Mags for $154 if the 17 WSM is an itch you'd like to scratch.

I could probably get over most shortcomings at that price, except for accuracy issues I guess. I have 4 of them now. Other than a magazine issue with my .233 (which Ruger took care of quickly by sending me a new mag after a phone call), the 3 I have shot function and shoot good. I have a .223, 6.5 Creed, and 308. I can't comment on the 3006 I just picked up as I haven't shot it yet. I doubt if is is any different than my first 3. At $199 they are a great bargain.

I could probably get over most shortcomings at that price, except for accuracy issues I guess. I bought their stainless model in .308 Win. because I liked the smooth action with the short bolt uplift, also like the location and operation of the tang safety. It comes with two piece scope mounts, and to me has a nice overall balance. The accuracy is good, maybe not a Styer, but is comparable to most rifles like M70 or Ruger M77. This new design seems like they didn't cut quality in the barrel or action. The short comings: The trigger has the irritating little blade feeler thing like some of the Savages. Mine only adjusts down to 3 lbs pull. which is OK for me but more than advertised. The stock width at the butt pad is extremely narrow, so I wouldn't want it in a big kicking caliber. The clip magazine is made of plastic/composite. I've had mine for about two years and havn't checked for after market stocks, but guess they may be slow to appear on market because of the unusual strip of V shaped bedding groves rather than a recoil lug.

If you take the trigger spring out (the spring that the adjustment screw compresses) and remove a few coils, then reinstall, it will adjust down much lower. And also it can still be adjusted higher by just tightening the screw more.

Good advise by Ken on trigger springs.
This works well on many rifles and you can always turn the screw back in for a higher pull rate.

I removed the spring and replaced it with a spring that was the same size, but softer. Mine now rests at just under three pounds consistently.

I did the same. I have a plastic tube of various diameter and thickness wire spring stock that I got from Brownells. Just looked for a lighter gauge wire that was roughly the same coil diameter and then cut a piece the same length as the factory coil. Allowed for a nice 2lb pull. I also took out the trigger paddle. No slam-fires.
Now with even more aplomb

Ran my local WalMart and got the clerk to check his computer's on hand stock for the complete list of what everybody said was on the close out List...and got Nada available in stock. The clerk said some this stuff had been closed out many moons ago too.
We have a WalMart Distro Center in town so I expect if there was anything left in the warehouse we'd be in line for it. Interesting. Been in a couple of my local Wal Marts the last few days that sell firearms. Don't recall either of them having a Ruger to sell. All I recall were the Savage Axis rifles. Might go back and check again. Do love a bargain priced rifle.

You first have to actually go in to Walmart.

If they drop the price another $50 the RARs would be priced about what they're worth.

If they drop the price another $50 the RARs would be priced about what they're worth. Unless you actually buy and shoot one. Than you would see how they outshoot most every other gun twice the price, out of the box, with no tinkering necessary. Doesn't matter what the stock is, or what the gun "looks" like. It is a solid, "working gun" that does what it is meant to, far better than most others at the price range.

Ken I have and so has a good friend who's a machinist and gunsmith. Ask him about his SS RAR that he now has 1K into after changing the barrel, trigger and stock to finally get it to shoot right.
Yeah I'm impressed with the RARs

If you need to buy a RAR to find something that shoots, your rifle universe is really limited.

So one of our local WM's has both the '06 and .243 in stock. How do these things function and shoot? Not usually a fan of lightweight rifles, and these feel pretty light to me. I could probably get over most shortcomings at that price, except for accuracy issues I guess. Their weak points are the magazine... which suck. Even at that price, I'd cough up the extra $129 and be buying a Howa from Whittakers.....that would be $129 well spent, and also be supporting a Campfire member's business vs "WE Don't Give a Damn "Wally Mart..... Ruger Americans are to Rifles as the Simmons are to rifle scopes.

Ken I have and so has a good friend who's a machinist and gunsmith. Ask him about his SS RAR that he now has 1K into after changing the barrel, trigger and stock to finally get it to shoot right.
Yeah I'm impressed with the RARs Someone that evidently has never heard of customer service from a good company. Not likely the average buyer of a $400 gun is going to sink $1000 into it, unless their expectations are a little overboard. The overall consensus is that most are scoping these, picking their favorite load, and getting good accuracy with no changes. Some do a 5 minute, free trigger job, but that's about it. But, to each his own.

Mine in 7mm-08 did this with 140 NAB all day long. P

People that don't like them just don't like them. But lack of accuracy is not really a valid excuse in most cases. The target above is pretty much status quo for out of the box, without much load development needed. Mine have done the same in a LH stainless compact .243, a LH standard stainless .243, and a LH stainless 7mm-08.

I am on my second RAR, the first was a 22-250, the bolt was machined improperly and had to send it back. Accuracy was , lets just say a challenge. That gun went down the road.
I am a slow learner so I just picked up another, this time a predator in 223, the 8twist, threaded muzzle are features I wanted. Well again lets just say accuracy has been a challenge. It's very fussy and inconsistent. Have a bit more load development and if it doesnt work out it too will go down the road. I want to like the darn things but am having a hard time.

I think Walmart works differently here, in that the sales guy who knows about the deals call all their buddies and that's who get the guns, 22LR ammo, etc.

Most loads are in the 2 to 3 inch range. And different loads wander all over the target. By comparison my cheap Savage's tend to shoot most loads well and a few exceptional, without different loads wandering all over the place.

The one Ruger American I kept is a 223 Predator, which is accurate, but being a single shot affair, rules it out of being any serious hunting rifle.......

I bought a RAR .223 acouple of years ago. Bought it from a 24hr member in my area, used, at a fair price. Mounted some old weaver rings and an old M8 4X I had onto it. Had to do the X-acto knife and sand paper mod to the magazine. Ran some Federal Fusion 62gr and Hornady White tail 60gr through it.
1" @ hundred and 2ish @ 200, does everything my 13 year old Grandson needs. I like to shoot it as well. Probably shoots better than we do with it with factory ammo.

What are you hunting with a 223 that would require a quick follow up shot? The magazines being shipped out now are still pretty cheap feeling, but much more reliable than the first run. Call Ruger, they'll probably send you a new one for free. I digest a lot of information on the net. It's rare that an American has a magazine issue anymore and it's rarer yet that they don't shoot MOA.

They single feed just fine from the bench, without magazine removal. The nice thing about a push feed action.

Mine is a 300 bo. The mag works well. The problem I have is it doesn't like to go bang every time I want it to. Took the bolt apart and cleaned/adjusted internals. Used softer primers. Now I think I figure out that if the bolt handle isn't pressed down all the way, and I mean every last mm, it gives me a light strike. Problem is it don't like to stay down all the way when carrying it in the woods.

Picked up a .243 RAR night before last. It was the display model, so dusty and a slight scratch under the barrel. I was of course very crushed that it was not pristine. You can still see the tear in my eye. Though that may have been for the additional discount. $159.00 plus tax.

I bought the last two RAR's at the local WM a couple of days ago for $179 each, a 30-06 and 243. Looking forward to seeing how accurate they are.

good luck finding a lefty at that price. But, if you check Galleryofguns (Davidsons) they are often on sale. And then you just find the lowest priced dealer in your area on their list, and have it shipped in.

Ask your walmart to scan the barcode on the box. Some of the stores didn't know about the pricing.
Not true. The clerk may not know, but the store does. All price changes are done on each gun in each store by store staff. If the tags aren't changed, the clerk may not have known.

Just left with a 243 a few minutes ago. Manager didnt know about it until I asked him to scan it. Still had 2 30-06s when I left. They also had 2 marlin 45-70 priced 589 on the shelf that scanned 299. So, if they are in stock, but not sale priced, when they scan it will the sale price show up, or what? Each store has to do these price changes at the store level. The price changes are not automatically done in the computer. If no one retagged the guns in the rack, and no one told the clerk on duty, or the mgr. for that matter, they might not have known.

My brother picked one up Sunday that I told him was still on the rack. I never checked to see what caliber it was so he called and it was a .270. Not the caliber of choice but at that price one can't complain.
Hopefully he doesn't catch the gay.

That may be the case sometimes, but the clerk at the store where I bought mine told me the markdowns were done in the corporate system. I was a manager at Academy Sports for awhile, and that's the way they did theirs too. It's up to the stores to make the shelf tag that reflects the discount. I can go into the Academy store near me and buy a Daiwa Saltist reel that is marked $329 for $198. They have been marked down in the system for a long time. It's up to the clerks at the stores to pour over the markdown printout and put the new shelf tag or price tag in place. I score some great deals armed with that knowledge.

The store I went to had no clue. The advertised price was $387. They tried to scan the barcode, didn't show any price. So I asked them to scan the actual box itself, and was $199.

Yeah I'm impressed with the RARs I got a chuckle out of that. If your buddy really spent $1000 on that, he's a pretty lousy gunsmith, unless he's charging himself his own fees. Besides the fact that Ruger would have fixed all those things for free.

My local WM ran Remington ADL's at $299 with a cheap scope and mounts 2 years ago. Ahhh yea. Nice sale. Picked up a .243 then Got in on this also - was a Black Friday deal. They had ADL's for 20% off of the regular $379 and Remington had a $35 rebate also. Ended up being about $270.

Walmart has the ADL/scope package for $379 right now and Remington has a $50 rebate on it. Just picked one up a week ago.
I may not be smart but I can lift heavy objects
I have a shotgun so I have no need for a 30-06.....
