I am trying to decide between a monarch III 3-12 x40 or VX2 3-9-40. The monarch is a side focus. Trying to settle on a scope for my model 7, 6.5 SAUM. Of those two scopes, which would most likely track better?

I'm not a twister, but as a general rule, 1" scopes aren't a good choice for cranking up and down, especially in the middle price range. If that's important to you, you should probably be looking at something else.

^^^I have both and neither track that great. Had better luck with VX3s, NF or Vortex. Agree depending on how much you want to crank more elevation adjustment with the 30MM tubes.

Honestly it Shouldn't matter once you start buying names like leupold or Nikon monarch.
Not saying I want to dial for 1000 yards and back to 100 all day long.. But if I'm sighted in at 200 and need to crank to 500 and then maybe back down to 300. That should be no problem

All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

My old brain finally coughed up that JB did a review on the Monarch III in Guns.

He reviewed the 2.5-10x42. Said it was a good scope and tracked well as I recall.

You can read it online at the Guns website. Once you're there, just search "Nikon Monarch" or something of the sort.

I am just looking at cranking to 600-650 yards max.

I looked at both again. I have had better luck with tracking with the Vortex in that price range and I have all 3. Leupold has better contrast, Nikon clearer glass both decent scopes. I would suggest spending some time looking and testing the turrets if you are going to 600 and back. If they don't track and you can't easily find zero again it is maddening.

I am not much of a turret twister but have done so in the past, and I'll say that I have never run into a Nikon Monarch that didn't track perfectly for me. I have zero complaints when it comes to the Monarch (and even pre-Monarch) series of scopes.
