I bought a box to shoot in one (or more) Savage 99 in 300 Savage caliber, but I have not yet shot the stuff. I think the velocity claim is 2,740 fps. My idea was to shoot it in my latest baby, the 1964 vintage 99E I bought here. I'll post the info when I do shoot it. I normally only shoot handloads, but I wanted to see how this souped-up ammo shoots in my rifles. My go-to load is a 180 grain round nose bullet over 41 grains of WW-748. Accurate, and faster than factory stuff. 40 grains of WW-748 duplicates factory velocity.

How does the crimping groove work out with the .300's overall cartridge length?

I have not bought loaded ammo, over here its $73.00 for 20, no i'm not kidding you.

But I have loaded the 150 SST that was made for the the 300 savage and have been very happy, over 20 sambar deer on the deck and none travelled more than 30 yds. the crimp line is perfect the rounds fired through a post mil F

If the ammunition was at a reasonable price I would certainly buy it, 2,740 fps is great velocity for the great cartridge, I do not even attempt to try and get to that

I believe Hornady puts a crimp groove in the right place for the 300 Savage case. I think I even bought a box of SSTs made just for the 300 Savage. I have so many boxes of bullets downstairs that I forget what I have! I'm having back surgery Friday, so I don't know when I'll get to the range to shoot my 99E with this ammo. As soon as I do, I'll post my results. My 99E only has a 20" barrel, so velocity might be down a bit. My other 99s are an F with 22" barrel and an EG with 24" barrel.

JB, hope the surgery goes well.

To make it easier for you when you get back into the play pen the hornady product code is 30303 that's the one made for the 300 savage

The crimp is in the right spot for .300 Savage OAL. I worked up some loads in mid-2015 with H4895 and Win748. With the 748 loads I had 0.93" and 0.98" 100 yard groups with a load that averaged 2554 fps. I have not shot a deer with them.

I have done most of my 300 Savage reloading and shooting with 180 grain round nose bullets. I have hoarded a box of Remington 180 grain round nose core-lokt bullets for years. I also have some Hornadys. I shot up all the Sierras I had. They shot very well.

In my 1937 99EG with Lyman peep sight I have been able to shoot groups about one inch at 100 yards, or at least I could about five years ago....maybe that was seven years ago! At any rate, the gun shoots if I do my part. I currently have my 99E ready to hunt with that load - 41 grains of WW-748 and a 180 RN bullet. In the EG with 24" barrel it clocks 2,450 fps. 42 grains gives me 2,500 fps, but it's too hot. Here in the wooded Northeast that's a good load. Most shooting is less than 100 yards in NY State's Catskills. I'm still eager to try the Superformance stuff in my rifle, and I will. It's just one more reason to love my 99s.
