Just curious what is involved in this scenario?

If one had a 1-piece bottom metal and a stock inlet for 2-piece, how involved is the fitting process?

I've read that a 1-piece inlet can be fairly simply adapted for the 1-piece metal, but not sure about what it's like going the other direction.

Thanks!

It depends. Guessing you may be asking about, say, a pre-64 M70 there are lots of variables. Sunny Hill and Williams/Blackburn will pretty much fit the wood, but there may be gaps, or places you have to relieve the wood, or both. If the 1 piece bottom metal has an integral magazine, say for a 30-06, the metal may not require any modification to fit the receiver and chamber cartridges correctly. But if the new bottom metal is intended to be used with the original magazine. spring, and follower there can be problems. There are wide variations in the dimensions of the magazine boxes for different cartridges. Some can be made to fit the new bottom metal without too much work, but something like a 220 Swift can require very precise mill work and would only be justified IMO in the case of a full custom.
