This hunt took place out of Smithers BC with Copper River Outfitters. Day one in the morning was spent setting up a base camp and periodically glassing the mountain top when the fog lifted a bit. Finally at about six that evening the fog lifted enough to hike a half mile to check a promising basin. We found one great mature looking goat up in the cliffs about 3/4 way up the mountain so the decision was made to chase that goat in the morning. We left base camp at 8AM the next morning. Hiked for about three hours to the base of the mountain where we set up a spike camp and located the goat again. We then started on what ended up being about a four hour climb. We finally found the goat one last time and I was able to steady my MOA Extreme Summit 300 Win and quickly put two 215 Berger hybrids dropping him in his tracks at 217 yards. Not wanting to take a chance for him to tumble I added one more insurance shot putting him right back in his bed for good. The guides knew how treacherous the cliffs and terrain was the elected to have me stay behind for the recovery. After six hours of climbing and repelling down to the goat they finally made it to the goat to skin and quarter out. They finally got back to me at about 11:30. We then headed back down to spike camp where we arrived at 2AM. A quick meal of Mountain House we all tucked into our tents and slept until 9AM the next morning. After a quick breakfast we took the best pictures we could considering and packed up camp for a six hour hike with very heavy packs back to base camp. The mountain goat has been #1 on my list for years and years and I am proud to say I was able to kill an outstanding 6.5 year old Billy.

We greened him out at 49 4/8. But I don't care. This is my most proud hunting moment ever!!! The goat is truly the hardest hunt in NA. They live in some nasty nasty stuff and are very underrated IMO.

Regardless of what the score is he is a fine billy. Those who have never hunted goats don't really realise what they are getting themselves into smile They are tough customers who thrive in tough country.

See any grizz when you were out?

You know I was fine when I was climbing up. Never looked back just kept climbing. S**t got real when we headed back down and saw what we climbed up. Lol. One miss step or one slip and it's a long steep roll either until you level out or until you are up against a boulder and or tree. Especially at dark 30 with a heavy pack and headlamp. We did not see any grizzly but saw a fresh track. I'm going back to hunt grizz with them sometime real soon.

It sure does get you to focus on making sure every step you take is a good one wink A walking stick helps too in that situation.

There should be a decent chance at a grizzly in that area and you may get a real pretty one should you decide to spring for a hunt.

I'd love to hunt those goats, but I'm afraid I don't do heights/cliffs real well. Things get spinning.

Congrats Joel, what a great goat! Man, that sucker's heavy, but as you will probably agree now, any goat is a heck of a trophy to be proud of!

I've said it before, but heard stories of guys who left camps or at least a good number of various items up on the mountain!

Way to get it done and thanks for sharing your pictures and story (and dream hunt) with us!

The hunt was simply amazing and the scenery was second to none. Smithers is one of the most beautiful places I have had the chance to visit. This hunt was one for the books for sure!!!
