I am a die hard RUGER fan but lately i have been wanting a 336 in 35rem,but now i see the xlr is available in35 also.Which would be better?Would that extra 4" of barrel make a big diff? would the longer barrel be less "handy"i know it would be in the timber where i plan on using it!I like the idea of stainless for my boat, and i could have the barrel cut down.My sight would be an aimpoint. Could save money by just getting a 336.Just looking for some ideas from all you marlin users out there.

If you like big, long, heavy, unwieldy lever-rifles, with metal that glows, by all means by the XLR....2MG

If your thinkin of leverguns, chances are you already know you need a fast handling, light gun that come up to the shoulder quick an gives you a direct sight picture with a minimum of fussin.
The 24" is not as awkward as folks would have you believe-esp. with the 1/2 magazine. If you insist on a sling, an want to bust thru the brush, then the carbine is your choice-If you need 7 rnds of firepower, then you need the carbine. If your a staunch traditionalist, then you need the carbine. If your flexible regarding any of the above, get yerself to your dealer, grab a new XLR, and shoulder it, check your sight picture, swing the gun like your followin a runner, an then do the same with the carbine-choose the one that works best for you-you are your own best expert here.
One more thing. Ive personally seen a brand new 336c .35 Rem. completely wrecked by sittin in a boat. 1) stainless will rust, 2) even laminated wood will warp an peel.
Good luck n good shootin

Since laminated wood is generally heavier than walnut, you might need the extra 4" of barrel to balance the weight of the stock.

My favorite 336 style is the Sporting Carbine with a 20" barrel and 2/3 magazine. Unless you are hunting in stuff so thick that you nearly need a machete to hack your way through, 4" of additional barrel length shouldn't be a big deal.

The handiest 35 Remington that I've ever shot was a Remington 141 that had had its barrel trimmed back to the length of the magazine. Even with a Weaver K3 with a post & crosshair reticle mounted on it, it balanced nicely and pointed quickly.

My 336A 30-30 with the 24" barrel is one of the best balanced rifles I have ever handled. I have picked up a couple of the XLR rifles and find them to be extremely well balanced as well. I do agree that the stainless is too shiny though.

I have three early 336A's. Two in .35 and one .30-30. I have two 71's, a Browning and a Winchester. I also have a Winchester 64 in .30-30. 6 rifles with 24" barrels, pistol grips and 2/3's magazines.

They all hang and balance very well, are a joy to shoot and carry. I've hunted in thick stuff with longbows and recurves longer than my 24" barreled rifles. Not sure why 4" of barrel makes them impossible to hunt with.

Not a stainless fan as walnut and blued steel are the epitome for me.

I'm another fan of the short magazine guns. This is one of my favorites the 336 SC configuration.

I also just bought this one in 30-30. It's a model 30TK that I'm going to have rebored to either .356 or .375 win.

Personally I like the XLR but Marlin put out a short barrel 35 Rem in stainless that was pretty nice. You can find them once in a while. I might know where one is even. My own XLR in another caliber is going to get chopped to 20" and have XS sights added.

For a short handy carbine try and find te 336D in 35 rem..its basically a stainless guide gun. I agree with Mak, the 24" tube is not as bad as people make it out to be. If you are looking though for a gun that you need 100-150 yds out of then any of the offered barrel lengths will do

Long barrels don't bother me. I've had lever rifles from 18" to 25", and it really didn't make that much difference. And I do hunt in the brush.

Unless you might use the rifle to face down a mob, you might consider cutting the mag down to a button magazine. Any more than 3 shots at deer are wasted anyway, and usually that is true of any more than 2. I like the looks of a button mag, and it lightens the front end some.

I can't help but like the older Marlins a lot better than the new ones. I cannot warm up to the new stainless steel guns.
My 1957 336 RC straight stock carbine in .35 Rem. suits me to a T.
