Loading for my buds 300WSM, setting back the shoulder a good bit, sized brass chambered fine. Loaded bullets at .040 off the lands, same brass that cycled fine will now not allow the bolt to close.
What am I missing?

Seating die screwed down too far into the press? Nope, just checked all the die placements. Im thinking the brass has a lot of miles on them, wonder if that's the issue. Just super weird, makes me think Im missing something basic...

Measure the neck with a bullet seated and without. Also, Is the seating die crimping the the bullet?

Also, is the primer seated properly? Did you make dummy round sans primer?

Check primers for proper seating?
Get a marker and start painting. See where the rub is when closing the bolt.
You sure the bullet is not seated long?

Paint a loaded round all over with Sharpie, try chambering it, and see where the rub marks are.

How did you measure the distance to the lands?
If you are truly .040 off, and the empty sized case chambers and extracts with ease, then it must be the seating die.
Sounds to me like either your OAL is long or the seating die is set to crimp and is buckling the case.
How did you set up your seating die?

Any foreign object in the chamber? Lint, hair, etc?

The throat is short on a 300WSM so I suspect seating depth.
Also, if you trimmed the brass for length but left a small burr on the case mouth it will chamber fine empty but it'll read as tight when you seat a bullet and try to chamber.

Had this problem once with 300WSM. The die was a little too far down and had pushed the shoulder down and there was a tiny bit of a bulge right behind the shoulder. Had to pull and toss those reloads. Measure a clean fired case right behind the shoulder and one of your reloads.

Early on after I acquired a .300 WSM I found it necessary to bump the shoulder back more than normal in order for the brass to chamber. I actually had to set the press to cam over in order to obtain the needed sizing. May or may not be related to your problem.

Lets us know when you figure it out what the problem was.

Seater die not adjusted properly. As Jordan pointed out, that would be my guess too...

How did you set up your seating die? Good post and questions. I still think his seater is not adjusted properly..

I agree. Had the same trouble a couple times back in the 70's when I was starting out with the '06.
It is very easy to crush the shoulder out to a larger diameter with the seater die.

OK, I do think the seater die is too far down but Im out stem. I have it as high as I can go and still seat the bullet to proper depth...
thoughts?
