Hey guys, I'm kicking around picking up a used Montana. The rifle is in excellent shape but honestly in a. A caliber I have no use for. My thought is to have re-barreled to 6.5 SAUM or a 7mm SAUM. I know that the Montana has a pretty good following on the fire. I guess I'm wondering what thoughts are on the Montana as a donor rifle. Also what would be a good price for good used montana? I think I could get into the rifle for $700 or so. I just don't know, I'm looking for some moral support I guess.

I own four, the 8400 7WSM is stock and there is no need to change it. The 223 didn't shoot good enough for me so that was my excuse to have an 8 twist barrel installed. The last two were donors, one is now an 8 twist 6x47L and the other a 6.5x47L, all the barrels sold for a 100.00+ each.
A SS 700 or 70 action plus a Mickey stock will cost about as much as a used Kimber donor.

You can spend a lot more for a lot less. Action, trigger and stock are worth more than that easily.
If you've got an 8400 wsm Montana you can buy for $700, please shoot me a pm if you decide to pass on it.
Seriously....

RDW what barrel did you go with? I'm thinking Lila and probably using the modified (SAS) version. Did you have the actions blueprinted? If I was going to use parts I wouldn't run anything other that r700 or clones so I mostly wondered if the montana's were worth building off of. I don't really need to do it but they've caught my eye as of late. I had a proof/razor ti screwed together in 6cm and put it in a manners elite and it's pretty light but I thought a Montana in 6.5SAUM would be cool.... Thanks for the info guys

Thanks for the info guys Lone Peak Razor action??? If so what do you think of it? I've looked at their website and they sure look nice. Seem to have a good rep so far. Any pics of your build?? Thanks - hoping to build a rig with a Ti action next year if I can.

I built a Montana and a Classic using Lilja barrels. Both of them shoot extremely well. The Montana is now a 17 Rem. and the Classic is a 243. I do not regret doing it. The Classic was a donor, but the Montana I bought new to be rebarreled.

I currently have three Kimber MT's... one I haven't shot is a used 257 Roberts. If it won't group it's going to get the Lilja treatment as a 6.5 Creedmoor or 260 Rem.

I like Kimber Montanas. I have one that I had Pacnor screw a 7mm Weatherby barrel onto. I had them take the factory contour and increase the taper after the chamber the full length of the barrel, ending at 620" at the muzzle. I haven't bedded or shot it yet but it handles great.

I like the Kimber platform to build on.....most recently 6.5 CM and one poker in the fire to be 6x45.

I didn't pay for extras but I think Dave screwed it on straight. The 223 shoots three shots less than MOA at 200 but Form'd gave me some crap so I shot five.

Montana changed to a .300Savage with a douglas. I'd do it again. 100 yards: 200: 300:

I had PacNor do a .223AI with an 8 twist. Sucker shoots. I have no idea if they trued it or not.
I bought a reamer and an X caliber 8 twist blank and had ITD dupe contour and chamber 6 Dasher. Sucker shoots. No idea on the he trued it or not.
Bad ass little rigs.
Screw you! I'm voting for Trump again!

Hawkins rings, one piece, 20 moa, level comes in the top cap. Really nice fit and finish! I like talley but these rings look and feel like they are made a lot better. I didn't even lap them. Sturdy and the 20 moa, level top half really make the hawkins rings a better option. The dbm is Hawkins too.

That weight was without the scope but included the rings. I don't think I had installed the front pic rail yet, when I weighed it.

Guess I should have had NEW Kimber Montana re barreled. I bought a new Kimber Montana 270WSM that shot poorly, about 2" groups at 100 yards. Tried many loads, with not much improvement. Sent it back to Kimber. They returned with no modifications and with a three shot test target that was 1.25" at 50 yards and said it was in spec. Sold the POS and had Jim Kobe build me a 270 WSM on a Rem 700 with a light McMillan stock and went sheep hunting. That rifle was easy sub 1" for five shots at 100 yards.

........... Over and out.......... I don't want to get sideways of anybody; but, when I see this typed or hear it spoken I have to say, "don't do that". They don't go together. Doing so is as wrong as two boys kissing.
