Been working up loads for the pre64 Fwt .30-06 I got from Yar her on the fire. Mostly 150 NBT. Ok groups, but not great. Decided to load up some 130 TTSX of which I have a bunch and the .308W and .300Savage like. The barrel was pretty warm for the first lower group. Let it cool down and then fired three slow. The second higher 3 shot group was the result.

Ramshot Big Game: 63Gr....It's moving right along.

As long as you are happy with it, that's all that matters. I personally don't shoot 150's or lighter pills in my (any of my) 30-06's. I get awesome accuracy from 165's, 180's, and 200's.... How's that rifle bedded buddy?? Shoot multiple 5 shot groups on the same paper and that will tell you more about the consistency of your rifle. Here's an example:

Sorry Battue, not dissing on your rifle. I know it's a beauty. Do you have any more pics of your range day? 3 shot groups or even 5 shot groups. That to me looks like a 5 shot group with a big spread AND a shot gun pattern to the left of it.... Sorry, I had to say that.. blush

No problem on the response, I agree for the most part. Only had 10 of them loaded. Shot two to move it close to center and then shot the 6. It shows promise. I've been trying to find a slow .30-60 150 gr load that shoots great, but perhaps it doesn't want that.

Paper came out of the range garbage can. Pattern on left was already there.

Bedding appears standard issue free float.

Addition: agree again, not enough to make a definitive answer, but I've been around good let offs long enough to know when something good is showing itself. 😉

battue, that group will kill lots of deer with no problem.

bsa, I understand where you are coming from, but ground squirrels under 200 and PDs at under 350-400 will not be the usual quarry with a .30-06. The hunting rifle (deer, etc., and up) rarely calls for more than two or three shots.

I have one '06 sighted in with 180s and another with 150s. Depends upon what I am doing. I have no idea what either does for five or ten shots. They are pretty good for three. A third one is available, perhaps to look at, as it is not sighted in due to a scope change. No debate! Just the difference between a few times a year hunter and a serious varmint or target shooter.

Best wishes to each,

Jack

Jt,

That rifle is soon to shine.

First off, sometimes I've found they have to settle into the bedding for some reason. Often not, but sometimes. Had the screws tight on this one and then later noticed for some reason they backed off a tad. Now they don't. Second, it had been shot little when I acquired it and again sometimes they get better with some rounds. This one has around 100 so far and it is coming around. Third, I'm fairly sure I best up the speeds on the 150's. I'll be surprised if it doesn't respond. Fourth, I've noticed when changing from CC bullets to all copper, for some reason it takes a few rounds for the barrel to adjust to the change. I think that is what I saw in those two groups. Would like others opinion on that, but it is something I've noticed more than once.

Stay tuned. And as much as I respect BSA's opinion, I don't have to shoot 10x5 shot groups to know if a rifle shoots better than good. 100-200-300 will tell the tale once you get it perking. 0.5in all day rifle? Nope. Solid 1in? Count on it.

Stick 52 grains of 4064 under the 150. If that doesn't shoot well then something is wrong.

battue, I haven't developed loads for an 06 for 30+ years.. But I had two that I am still using.. One was for 150's 59 g. of IMR 4350 and a CCI 250 primer.. That primer made a huge difference.. The other was for a Sierra 165HPBT.. Used 57 grain of the same powder and the same primer.. Best of luck.. Deer season is coming soon..

The CCI 250 of today is not the same primer as the 250 of thirty years ago. The new one is hotter.

Ha, imagine that.

This afternoon I loaded up 20 with IMR 4350. 150gr Accubond; 10 with 57.5gr and 10 with 58.gr. Used a CCI LRBR primer. 5 shot groups ran around 1.5in, with the 58gr giving a for now slight edge. Although 10 doesn't tell much of a story. Both better than the previously reduced loads. Not much more time to mess with it before Deer Season so probably will stick with it for now. If it doesn't work, it will be my fault. However, will try the 150TTSX and will see what they do.

Almost there and perhaps am....

Used a new set of Hornaday dies just to see. Went from pushing 1.5-2, to just over 1 for 4. Needs more groups, but I would be surprised if it things got worse or better. Shooting in shade. Dead calm.

Leupold 6x42. Removed and replaced scope for 5th shot.

Ready to go. Have had good results with Hornady seater dies in the past, and it seems to have worked again. Only other change today was I moved the bullet out a tad more and with the temp, the barrel never heated up much.

Last 4 100 groups have been just over an inch. With this one today at 200 things are good for now. Even with the one out of the group round, I don't need 10 more groups to know what I have. Misses are on me.

Also removed the scope from the QR's and put it back on before shooting today.

Leupold 6x42. (Would more xxxx's improve anything? Doubt it.)

Thanks Yar for a fine rifle.
