The original Bausch and Lomb Balvar series was introduced circa 1952 and continued in production until circa 1963. The Balvar 4 (2 1/2-4X) and Balvar 8 (2 1/2-8X) were 1 inch tube scopes with no internal adjustments that require externally adjustable mounts like the Bausch and Lomb, Kuharsky, or Stith Master series. Their introduction predated the development of internally adjustable scopes with 'constantly centered' reticles, but since sighting-in adjustments were made using the scope mount the reticle was always centered. Their principle advantages were ruggedness resulting from a simplified internal design and optical clarity resulting from always viewing the reticle through the optical center of the scope and the fact that B&L was a leading manufacturer of optics at the time.
