Looks like a rifle weight barrel, so 99D? That's not an easy one to find!

Very nice! It would work well for the kind of Elk hunting I do. Been wanting one in 300 for awhile now. Never really thought about a take down, a little hard case would be rather handy.
Congratulations!

The rifle weight barrel is noticeably heavier than the later medium weight barrel and has a dovetail cut directly into the barrel for the front sight. A rifle weight barrel 99 made as late as 1928 would be very rare. The medium weight barrel of that era should have a ramp integral to the barrel with a dovetail for the front sight. If it has the medium weight barrel it would be a 99F. The 99D's didn't have medium weight barrels and were discontinued about 1926. The only difference between the early 99D (rifle weight barrels) and 99F (lightweight barrels) were the barrels. When all 99's went to the medium weight barrels about 1926/28 there wouldn't have been any difference between the two models. David

Thanks, David. The barrel looked too heavy to me for a 99F, but I don't think I've held a 99F in 300 so it very well could be.

If I helped talk you into this one, you owe me a nice single malt! You got the bargain of the Century. Looks to be in great shape!

These 99's are addictive, especially the ultra cool factor of the TD's.

I'm going to rehab one of mine for a gift for soon to be son in law. Called Wenig about stock prices earlier today. Your new rifle has inspired me!

Ramp front sight makes it a 99F, I do believe (as David said).

It's an F with a medium weight barrel. That sight probably came out in 1927. I have a 1926 G with a medium barrel and a sight similar to the last lightweight barrel sight. I've seen several of these. There's a pic on page 68 of my book showing eight of the variations from the beginning of production to the medium barrel integral ramp front sight. David

When it comes to: guns, money, cigars, big-titty women, and killing communists, the Cubano is never NOT serious.

Don't talk to me about E Types. Had a GORGEOUS Blue/tan leather 74 V12. Sold it to a retired Navy guy to use as a down payment on our first house when we first got married. My wife is high maintenance.

On one hand, you can't drive a Savage and pick up hot women with it. On the other hand, you can kill an elk with a Ferrari. (Now that would be a U-Tube video I would pay to watch!)

Been married 39 years so hot women on the Harley would be out of the question anyway. Especially in a small place like Pinedale. I wouldn't get 2 blocks without someone reporting me to the BOSS!

Finally took the 99 out for a test fire. Barrel sights are always a disadvantage, but the previous owner had it set. three little almost touching holes at 50yds about 1" low, so I did my customary half gallon milk jug filled with water at 75 yards ( the distance from my tree stand to food plot), dead nuts on. Used both Federal factory 180s and my own 180gr Speer Hot Cor loads that both shoot to POI. Sweet gun. Hope a deer or a hog cooperate, but these animals are all but nocturnal, and without a scope, one has to hope for a dumb one! smile

Jorge,

Beautiful wife! Great find on the '99! A blessed man, indeed. grin

Do you handload for the .300 Savage? My neighbor just received her Dad's '99 in .300 Savage (in excellent condition!) and wants to hunt with it. We talked about me working up some loads for it for East Texas whitetails and hogs.
