There was a discussion on here a while back and somebody referred to a M70FWT stock as resembling a French whore. You're misquoting me... "French Whorehouse Stock" is the correct term. Nice job on the whorehouse rehab.

Maybe just the pics or my computer, but it still has quite a bit of red in it. What did you stain your finish with to get the color, or did the wood have a tint to it before the finish went on. Also, what finish did you use? I like the look of it.

Looks much better. I like the more natural look of the wood.
If you don't mind me asking, what did you use to get the old finish off and then what was used to finish it with?

Excellent work.
A steel grip cap would add a bit to the looks and protect your hard work in that area. The factory should have included that, of course.

Your stock looks great! I like the way you can see more of the fiddle back figure that the factory finish was hiding. Yeh, the Winchester featherweight stock is the "French whorehouse" design and the Weatherby stock is the "California cat house" design.

I stripped it with Jasco paint remover. I first bought a can of their Varnish and Stain remover but after several coats and a couple of days it just would not cut the factory finish. It just softens the finish and you have to scrape the soft varnish off- a good way to put a lot of dings in your stock. Went back to the store and got the paint remover which I have used on previous stocks. It took the finish off pronto. I then wiped the stock down with mineral spirits to get any remaining stain out. A light sanding with 320 grit paper took off any remaining dings and knocked the grain down. This is a "fair weather" hunting rifle so I wasn't too worried about getting the stock completely sealed. I rattled canned it with satin Varathane. It goes on easy and with a little sanding between coats (I did 4) the end result looks pretty decent. I have used it on other stocks and it has held up to normal wear and tear well.
