When I first bought my 99 and got on this forum a few weeks ago, some of you asked for pictures. I finally got on photobucket and here are some pictures: http://s1126.photobucket.com/user/novitch4Golden28ga/library/I think it is an EG from 1946 or 1947 based on the serial number. 5164xx. Is that correct? I believe the front sight is a Lyman 17a. Do any of you know what type of tang sight it has? Also, about what vintage are theses sights?

Yes. It's a Lyman 56 and a nice looking 99.

That's a great start to a long and happy obsession Golden28!!
I had that same sight set-up on a 99 in 358. The "ghost-ring" effect, of both sights using circles to sight through, made for very quick and consistent sight picture acquisition. Great for close woods work!

I bought the gun for still hunting here in the Northwoods of northern WI so I'm glad to here good reports about the sights. One of the things that jumped out at me the first time I picked the rifle up was how quickly I could acquire the target.
Why is it you get obsessed with these 99's? I'm already thinking about my next one, Should it be a 300 Savage or 303 Savage?
Also, is my rifle an EG?
Thanks.

The Lyman 17A is still made, as well as its inserts. An excellent front sight to use in conjunction with the receiver sight when seeking fine accuracy at the range. Should you take the rifle hunting, you might wish to swap that sight out for a simple bead front sight.

Yes, it is an EG. Nice looking specimen too.

1948 EG Look for rifles with condition and original. Probably the easiest to find will be another EG but in .300 Sav. You're off to a good start. Someone will be here to help with the question anytime you need. Buy a book or two and learn before you spend your money.

You might need a copy of my book, "A Collector's Guide to the Savage 99 Rifle and its Predecessors the Model 1895 and 1899". I'm running a Christmas special for $56.99 which includes shipping. I sign, number and inscribe to the book to the buyer or however the buyer would like it inscribed, like as a Christmas present. See the link below for details of the book, where to send the payment, etc. David

There is a lot of misinformation out there on 99's. I wrote my book from info provided to me by many Savage experts and personal observation and ignored what was already written. David

I'm wondering what the original front and rear sights on this rifle looked like. Does anyone have a picture of a similar rifle with original sights?

Blackened brass front shown on page 68 and semi-buckhorn rear shown on page 88 of my book. The sight on page 88 is actually on an early 99F but is the same used on the 99EG's. David

Here is the picture of your 99 250. Is the top of the receiver drilled and tapped for scope mounts?
