Looking to get myself a late Christmas Gift. Primary use will be deer and bear in new england. Primarily from treestand but when I get bored I walk around a little. I handled a back country a few months ago and it really "spoke to me". However, the price over a stainless vanguard didn't see justified. I see I can now get one in 30 06 shipped for 850. Never thought I would own another 30 06 but overall this seems like a good, versatile rifle. Anyone disagree and think I could do better for around 850? The accuguard really appeals to me as I prefer stainless to cerakote. However, it appears the #3 barrel and aluminum bedding block add 2 pounds. Wish they offered the backcountry in stainless like the original backcountry.

Chrome moly on the new BC was the reason I went with a stainless Vanguard. But the barrel is heavier.

At $850, I'd probably jump on the '06.

CDNN has them a little cheaper and yuo can save sales tax if you are buying local. O had an accugard 300 wby that I traded for a 300 Accumark. The accugard was almost 8 lbs with no scope but still a very very nice rifle. I would like one in 240 weatherby next go around

You can get the Wilderness which is the exact same rifle as the Back Country just minus Cerakote for even cheaper. Just another option.

I have had a Back Country in .300 Win Mag for several years and it has been my favorite "carrying rifle" for everything except Coues whitetails. It has proven to shoot very well with a variety of bullets from 130 TTSXs up to 200 ABs. I just gifted it to my stepson after he guided me through a very strenuous (and probably my last) Coues whitetail hunt. Too many rifles and too little time these days...

Thanks for the link Oldelkhunter. I think I just may be buying that. Too bad the accuguard does actually weigh 8 lbs. I was trying to convince myself it would weigh less. I have always loved the accumark styling but hard to justify price. Considered buying a stainless howa or vanguard, fluting it and putting it in a medalist stock but seems like too much money and trouble. Thanks for responses.

I've had both iterations of the Back Country in .30-06. I sold the S2 and kept the original stainless but I did replace the trigger with a Timney.

That said, the BC became a backup when I bought a stainless T3. She's a shooter, though, make no mistake. I would be content if this had to be the only rifle I had.

No pics of my 180 Partition load but it's as good or better. I made a reduced recoil load for my boy, he killed two bucks with it before puberty stole him from me.

Give Whittakers Guns a call and see if they have any deals for the end of the year. Might save a few bucks. Or they may have something else they could help you out with.

I've still got two left, and they just don't make them any better IMO. Good for you. I hope you kill lots of meat with it.
