I would rather have 5 rifles in 260, than a bunch of different calibers with similar ballistics.

Tom, I've go a 270, 7-08, and three 308's, but am still contemplating a 6.5 Creedmoor Guns come and go, but there's always a 308 here. I am the same way. Considering a Creedmor as well but still will always have a couple .308s in the safe.

OK, here are the real facts as I see them.
#1` You have the 'ballistic range' already covered.
#2 you asked the question, so you obviously like some rifle you saw, and it happens to be a 260.
#3 If you like it, buy it!
Who cares if you have the ballistics already covered? It's not relevant if you asked the question in the 1st place.
I own four 270s, three 308s and four 30-06s. When I build a new rifle or buy one, I am 100% sure I already have a rifle that can cover the same ballistic ground. What difference does that make?

You are so close in performance with the cartridges you have, when using the proper projectiles, with similar BCs, I would think you would be better off taking the money you would have spent, and upgrading what you already have.
Most guys I know have numerous rifles that are "almost" what they really want. I normally advise them to consolidate the bunch of "almost" rifles, and get one or two that are "Exactly" what they want.
That might mean a McMillan stock, Nightforce, whatevertype upgrade on a certain rifle. Most guys grab the same rifle every time anyways, so you might as well grab your "exactly what I want" rifle instead of fiddling with the ones that you are not really satisfied with.

I'd dump that 270 off at the pawnbroker and replace it with a 6.5x284--take the trash out sort of thing.
Exactly what you were thinking, I imagine

You know I'd like to say yes, but lately I've been thinking maybe I should purge everything but the 8x57, .300 Win Mag and .257 Roberts(for small stuff)...I hope this passes before basic realism sets in...

"ballistic overlap" is a made up construct only existing on paper.
Buy it already.

Exactly what you were thinking, I imagine This was a good one..... I was going to suggest getting rid of everything else and keeping the 270. What's a 6.5/284? Another 270 Wannabe? I know a worldwide BG hunter of substantial experience who just sold a 6.5/284 who said who needs it?

The 280 Remington is overbore.
The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

Would and did. Even though I already had a 6.5x55 and have since added another 6.5x55. In addition to already having a .257 Bob, .25/06, .270, 7mm08, .280, 7x57, .30/06's, .308's, .243, 6mm and several other larger than .30 cal. rifles. Methinks I may have contracted a terminal case of Looneyitus.

That's the best advice right there. If you think you have an actual "need" for another rifle, you're playing stupid first-world games. If you simply "want" one, then follow Mackay's advice above.

No, there is no reason to buy a 260 if you have a 270 or 280.
BUT I STILL DID IT ANYWAY
I probably hit more elk with a pickup than you have with a rifle. I have yet to see anyone claim Leupold has never had to fix an optic. I know I have sent a few back. 2 MK 6s, a VX-6, and 3 VX-111s.
