Share your pictures! I put together a dedicated turkey gun, one of many, but the only one I still have! It's a Winchester 1300, for 2 3/4" shells, with a 18" rifle sight barrel with win-choke for screw in choke tubes. I added a Hogue forearm, Blackhawk adjustable stock and a Bushnell Trophy red dot. I load "magnum" 2 3/4" shells using 1 1/4 oz. nickle plated #5's. Patterns great at 40 yards, farthest I've ever patterned it. I hunt in central Wisconsin in some pretty big woods with some smaller fields. The combo of this gun and my loads have never let me down. Call them in close and take care of business! This year I've been invited out to Pennsylvania for turkey hunting and got drawn for Wisconsin. Looking forward to a busy turkey hunting spring! Best to all fellow turkey hunters going out this spring. Dean

I've given up on 12ga. 3 1/2" shotguns and turkey shells! LOL! I've had Benelli SBE's and Nova's, Mossberg 835's, Remington 3 1/2" 870's and Browning 3 1/2" BPS's. For a long time I used an old muzzleloading double barrel 10ga., I'm too old now for those thumpers. The Knoxx Blackhawk stock on the 1300 has a recoil reduction system in it that works great. But I love turkey hunting and turkey guns and am super happy I can still get after them!

Forgot to mention, I tricked out a Remington SP-10 for turkey hunting. Finally got tired of carrying around a 10 pound shotgun! Used to hunt spring turkey in 5 states, all eastern gobblers, never got out west or down south.

BPS 10 bore. XX Comp-N-Choke Remington #4s, either Premiers or Nitro Mags.

Used to shoot the 2 1/4 oz. Winchester #5s until they screwed the pooch and quit making the heavy 10 gauge loads. Never patterned a better load, from this gun or any 3.5 12 gauge.

Never counted a 10" circle with those 5s but over 40 pellets in the head/neck region of those X-Ray targets, 40 steps.

One heavy sum bitsch but holds nice and steady.

Gold 3" NWTF, 24" barrel. Star Dot tube, Williams Fire sight. #5 Long Beards run mid 160s in 10" but few in 20".

Federal Turkey Thug 6s run about the same but fill in the 20" circle. #5 Turkey Thugs, mid 150s.

Gun was picky as all get out. I tried 2 different Colonial tubes, SSX, original Jellyhead, Undertaker, Hastings .685 and Jellyhead Max. None of the above would break 100 with 6 different loads. Just about gave up and traded for a 26-28" gun.

Currently it's a $300 youth 870 in 20 gauge that I replaced the butt with an adult sized one, in black plastic.

Just a bead up front, no camo, some kind of $20 choke.

[Linked Image]

Prior to that it was a $179 Mossberg 500 in 12 gauge, no optics, factory xtra full choke.

I am not a real dedicated turkey hunter... No scopes on my shotguns or camo.. But this 97 12ga. did a great job on the last gobbler I shot with a shotgun..

My turkey gun is a 1996 Mossberg Viking pulled out of a scratch-'n-dent bin at Dicks. My feeling about turkey guns is this is one time a premium gun is ill-advised and it is better to have something that works over something that's pretty.

About a decade ago, all the camo started coming off, so I stripped it back and used spray paint to recoat the gun. Here is the finished job:
[Linked Image]

Here's the story of how I painted it:

Bubba Paints His Turkey Gun

Since then, I've had a bunch of folks ask me to do their guns, and folks wrote into me at T&TH to show their guns off. The nice thing about spray painting a shotgun is that if it gets scratched up, all you have to do is re-spray.

I have a 1.5.-4.5X BSA shotgun scope mounted. I have bad eyes and can't see a bead anymore. The rig is good past 40 yards on gobblers with 3 inch lead #4 Federals. However, most of my shots have been taken inside 20 yards. It's got a 28-inch ported barrel and a Carlson's Dead Coyote choke.

What he said! My 835 with 21/4 lead from a bench is worse than a 458 in a 9 lb model 70 or a 375 in a rem 700 classic. Love my lite gold 10 - turkey or geese its a killer on only one end - not mine!!

My current favorite, a Winchester Model 1300 Waterfowl (12GA, 3") with 22" barrel, .670 PureGold choketube, and Williams Firesights. Gift from my Dad years ago; I like the aluminum receiver for carrying all day.

My former favorite, a Browning BPS 12GA, 3" that I sold to a buddy (that's him with his Tom last spring). Nice shotgun but the steel receiver made this shotgun pretty heavy by the end of the day.

Benelli m2, 21" barrel, aimpoint 9000sc, and on that hunt it was an Indian creek choke shooting old black hulled Hevi shot #5s.

I've got about 10 different turkey chokes for it, and have killed birds with longbeard 4s, 5s, Winchester HDXR elite 6s, hevi13 7s, and Winchester supreme 4s the last couple years. I love shooting and tinkering way too much. I'm always looking for that "little bit better". It's a sickness!

keep the pictures coming...
You're motivating me to finally paint my old 28 inch barrel browning BPS or break down and buy a dedicated turkey gun.

Looking at the remington 870 turkey predator with a short 20 inch barrel and better camo finish.

After looking at your pictures.... I should be looking at something more upscale

Here is an original Mossberg 535 Turkey package shotgun (12 GA 3-1/2") that I used to own - killed several turkey's with it, this one was in Spring 2009. This was a nice, light shotgun to carry.

My current gun started life as a Remington 870 Youth 20ga. I stripped the gun completely down, took the receiver to a smith to drill/tap/attach rail, polished/deep cleaned barrel, replaced forearm with a synthetic from Remington, installed an adjustable Knoxx stock with a Limbsaver, and a Burris FFII sits on top with a custom made guard. I sanded it down, primed, and painted it with multiple stencils and lots of time. I hand load 1 5/8oz of TSS #9.5s. It will flat stomp turkeys. Killed a slam with it last year. Plan on trying a 28ga this year.

BPS 10 gauge. Used to hunt geese with it too, but now just turkeys.

I've even toned down the turkey hunting with it, shooting toms with my 20 gauge pretty effectively, but the 'ol 10 gauge straight up puts them down...

I've progressed from the Browning 3 1/2" 10 Gauge Semi-Auto, to the Mossberg 835 3 1/2", to Benelli SBE 3 1/2", to Encore 12 Gauge Turkey 3", and finally to the 20 Gauge Encore Pro Hunter, Realtree Extra Green, with Aimpoint 9000s Red Dot, 3" HeviShot #5 or #6 shot size. This is the best Turkey set up to date... and my shoulder and retina's thank me every time I pull the trigger... Super dense patterns, light and manuverable, hits like the Hammer of Thor.

Don't think anybody else has represented the 16ga contingent so I'll show it some love. Several years ago I got to thinking about how the popularity of the 20ga had grown as a turkey gun. I got to thinking of the 16 as a turkey gun. I've always been a 16ga nut and had at least a half dozen in the safe at the time, but they were all long and flashy. I thought about it awhile and recalled that Remington had recently made a run of 870 Express youth guns in 16 with 23" barrels and matte finish. They had stopped making them at that point and it took me a few months to find one. I bought one, ordered full sized camo synthetic stocks for it and got a XX Full Comp-N-Choke tube for it. Chosen load was the Federal Premium 1 1/4 oz Magnum #6. Worked like a champ on this gobbler at about 35 yards. The next season I killed a young gobbler and a jake that threw his head into the pattern with one shot.

Chosen load was the Federal Premium 1 1/4 oz Magnum. Worked like a champ on this gobbler at about 35 yards. The next season I killed a young gobbler and a jake that threw his head into the pattern with one shot.

Terrific, SC.

I think ill try to track one down. Love the 16's. Can shoot all day with nary a bruise.

Do you have any model numbers on the replacement stocks? I really like the pattern.

It was #18613, but it looks like they’ve changed the pattern now. I bought those in ’08.

Got a couple of more but no pics.

Really liking the little 11-87! It may be my next year's project. I have 5 pounds of #8-1/2 TSS to play with this spring. Excited to give it a try.

I'm getting the "itch" for a couple new turkey guns after seeing all the great turkey getters posted!

Not really a dedicated turkey gun - but this Full choke Browning Auto-5 in 16GA will get the job done. This bird from April 2013 with the Federal Premium 1-1/4 oz buffered lead #6 load.
