there are as many ways to make 'tater salad as there are cooks. My way is best of course, David comes real close, but his exclusion of pickle relish is suspect. Redskin potatoes, boiled whole, skin on, and not cooked to freaking mush Dukes (Or Hellmanns in a pinch) Yeller mustard salt, fresh black pepper pickle relish fine diced sweet onion chopped scallions and some fine diced red bell pepper for color Paprika on top. For me, that's the way to do it

I've been making "taterless" tater salad using dice turnips instead of potatoes.
boiled turnips, diced to about 1/2"
one bunch spring unions, diced
1-2 tsp. Wickles pickle relish
hard boiled eggs, diced
REAL mayo
sour cream
A little S&P
This works for my low carb. diet! And, tastes pretty darn good!

Are you guys asleep at the wheel because I haven't seen fresh dill from the garden mentioned in any of the above ? Love hard boiled eggs in mine as well. The eggs just seem to enhance the flavor of the potatoes (reds) themselves.

Now my wife makes what I guess is a Russian style potato salad and uses sour crème instead of mayo, and adds chicken and dill. Pretty good stuff in it's own right, but not what I think of as a classic potato salad.

I'm all grown up now, so it's Hellman's or Dukes.

I use them about 50% of the time. Depends on what phase of the moon and high or low tide.

You guys got the basic recipe but I add a spoon of sour cream (adds to the Miracle Whip ) I also add some bacon and recently I added a good chunk of blue cheese.

Of course, nothing says, the salad must be the same each time.
I made Irish Potato Salad once. Diced potatoes, chopped green onions, half mayo, half sour cream. Not bad.

I've tried making it a few times with marginal success and the store bought stuff I've tried wasn't very good so I don't eat much potato salad. Then last summer I had some friends from WY over for a little BBQ so I picked up a couple of pounds at the Wall Mart deli. Believe it or not it was some of the best I've had and my friends raved about it. When I told em were I got it my friends wife giggled and whispered, thanks for the info I buy it too.
