Bought a 243 sps stainless for a donor. I made the mistake of shooting it and wouldn't ya know it shoots good. Anybody drop one of these in a McMillan? Thinking of pulling the trigger on a classic with edge fill. Thoughts or suggestions on a different stock? Thanks.

I love my Classic in regular fill with a 22" magnum contour barrel. It's a restocked LVSF that came with the SAUM contour.

With a regular sporter like yours an edge fill Classic should be great.

My concern was the classic would be too beefy in the forend for that Sporter contour.

Couldn't pass up a 700 stainless with Talley rings for $350. My mistake was shooting it:)

Thanks for the reply mathman.

I like the McM Hunter style far more than the Classic, particularly with 24" barrels.

I really like the Remington standard contour in a Classic. I think I'd be standard fill for balance, but I think it's tough to top a Classic for a general purpose rifle.

Get the stock that fits your face, and forget about whether it "looks good."

I would put that SPS in a Mickey Mtn Rifle myself, because they fit me perfectly.

Classic Edge & a SPS work great:) And they look just like this when all together, barrel looks fine IMHO, don't think I'd like a skinnier one though. I did chop the barrel on this 7MM-08 to 22.5", balance is nice!

What's the difference between a Classic and Compact/Hunters Edge? It seems to me they are the same everywhere except the fore end is slimmed down and the checkering is different. Is that right?

SLM! What scope is that and is the stock bedded? What does it weigh all up? Got one I cut at 21" and thinking about a similar set up.

Yes on the bedding. It now wears a Leupold 6X36 and weighs 6# 13 oz.

Yes the fore end is much slimmer on the Hunters Edge and the overall length is also shorter. Classic has been my favorite but really liking the Hunters Edge lately especially on a lighter contour barrel. Here they are both side by side.

The geometry of the pistol grip is different, the Compact style is more open, shallow radius, than the Classic.

Classic edge or Hunter's edge with your stainless 243 will make for a really nice combo. Actually thinking about doing the same thing myself.

Seems there was a time when a R700 / McSwirly / LW's / 6x42 M1 was the "thing".

Still is as far as I'm concerned.

My favorite is a Classic, but there's no flies on the Compact/Hunter's Edge version.

I don't recall the weight. Balance & handling was great, but I sold it earlier this winter just when I got it the way I wanted it, due to redundancy.

My 30-06 is .655" at 20", that's where I cut it off. Probably .650 at 24".

The magnum sporter SPS's are beefier near the chamber, I don't know if they are out at the muzzle or not.

Pretty sure a regular sporter is right at .650 at the muzzle @ 24". I have a stainless SPS 7mm-08 barrel cut @ 22.5 and its right at .656 - .657 on my cheapo calipers.

+2 on the "fits you" aspect. Personally I prefer the Hunters Edge better because of the thinner, more open, grip and the thinner fore arm. I put one on a Pre-64 .270 FWT that comes in right around 7 lbs with a Lyman 48 aperture sight and Montana sling with swivels.
