For culinary illumination I go to my Black Diamond headlamp. Great for in the glove compartment or night time trips to the woodpile.
I have several.

Now Denny, you remind me of the old, "Sticker Than a Harrow at Midnight".
Stay tuned.

A little off the beaten path but something Mom used to make.

Ma Po’s Bean Curd with ground venison (originally ground pork)

• 1 box tofu, firm or extra firm

A
• ½ tsp chopped garlic
• 3 tbls cooking oil (for venison, I do mostly butter and a splash of sesame seed oil)
• 2 tbsp chopped green onions
• 2 tsp chopped ginger
• ½ lb ground pork (substitute straight ground venison)
• 1sbsp hot bean paste (This is not actually hot. See pic below.)
• (With venison, I add a tiny pinch of Chinese five spice and a tsp of brown sugar. And I like more heat so I add some dried hot peppers to A.)

B
• 1 tbsp sake
• 1 cup water
• ½ tsp salt
• 1 ½ tbsp. shoyu (soy sauce)

C
• 3 tsp cornstarch
• 2 tbsp water

D
• 2 tbsp 2” long green onion
• ¼ tsp peppercorns

• Cut bean curd into bite sized squares.

• Heat pan and 3 tbsp oil/butter,
• stirfry (A) flavoring veggies until fragrant
• add pork and hot bean paste

• when meat is brown add bean curd and (B),
• simmer 3 mins on low

• add (C) to thicken and add green onions and pepper corns

Serve with rice and stir fried veggies.

The “hot” bean paste:

I was hoping mixing it with venison would legalize it. This and deep fried are about the only way I'll touch tofu.

I could make a list of food I do not like with a short lead pencil, and have plenty of lead left.

I have preferences but can make do with almost anything. I don't eat bugs unless of the 8 legged underwater kind. Never liked brussel sprouts. And there's some Asian pickle/fermented stuff that I won't try or haven't liked when I did. Had some salted dried squid legs once I had to spit out.

Oh, I guess I was thinking of less exotic foods than some of those.

Richard, not everyone understands what "exotic" means to us Iowans (particularly those who grew up under a Scandinavian influence, i.e. Campbell's cream of whatever soup smile ).

My family moved around a lot, overseas and back, etc. We ate a lot of whatever people ate where we were--with some good old USA favorites thrown in when we could get the ingredients. Got made fun of sometimes for what Mom had packed in the lunch box.

The first that we ever heard of pizza was at the Southside Cafe in A.C. I remember Dad asking the waitress what this "Pizza Pie" on the menu was. At complete and total odds with Dad's usual approach to the unfamiliar, he ordered it. I imagine that it was some sort of frozen pre-made affair. He ate it, I don't remember trying any, and reported that it was "all right", which could have meant anything from "superb" to "on the order of baked cow pie". I do know that it was a long time before I once again made its acquaintance - probably not until high school.

John, there was a time when I thought a McDonald's burger was something new, and different.

I remember when The Villager went in on Flint Drive in Storm Lake and we thought that it was the greatest thing ever. Before that, it was Coney Dogs at the A&Root. When I first got to Ames, the only burger doodle was Henry's, where you could get 5 or 6 burgers and something like 10# of fries for some ridiculous price. After eating the fries, you could wring out the paper bag that they came in and have enough cooking oil for a month.

Now John, to thoroughly hijack this thread, ever try the old pranks?
Squirt lighter fluid under the dorm room door, and light it?
And, the list goes on------.

large shipping envelope filled with shaving cream - insert open edge beneath door of dorm room - stomp on evelope

push in against locked dorm room door (occupants inside) - insert pennies in space created between door and frame - release - occupants unable to unlock door due to pressure

dorm room door left unlocked - occupant(s) asleep - set vacuum cleaner in middle of room - extend cord to outlet by door - plug in and quickly close door

Scored three huge pranks in college, when I lived in the dorm at UF. First was a water filled weather balloon in a room. When the student came home, opening the door pushed a stick with a nail on it, into the balloon. Water cascaded down 4 stories.
Second was charged capacitor taped to the underside of the urinal in the communal bathroom. Wire from that to the bowl. Another wire to a puddle of salt water on the floor. Peeing completed the circuit.
Third was a ceiling light bulb in a room. Broke that, attached a cherry bomb to the filaments. A large ketchup filled bag was taped to that. Turn on the light, everything in the room is coated in Ketchup. smile
