Just wondering which Leupold scope that
guys were putting on their 84M or 84L.
Var X 3 2.5-8?
Or
Var X 3 3.5-10?

I have 2.5-8x36's on my 84M's and currently have a Tract 2-10x42 on my 84L(it previously had a 6x36 on it).

Both work well. For a 84M I would lean towards the 2.5-8x36.

Since this is the fire I will suggest something completely different. I just put a Vortex Razor HD LH 1.5-8X32 on my Montana. I like it even better than the Leopold offerings.

2.5-8 on my 7-08 and 3-9 on my .223.
I like the 2.5-8's on them.

Vx3 4.5-14 but only because it was sitting orphaned when the rifle came home. Too lazy to swap it despite have a 3.5-10 and a 2.5-8 sitting loose currently.

VX-3 2.5-8x36 on both my 84M; VX-3i 3.5-10x40 on my 84L. Trying to put a VX-3 2.5-8x36 on my 8400 but need extended rings apparently.

84M and VX-3 2.5-8 are like apple pie and vanilla ice cream - about perfect.

Leupold 2.5-8x36 on my 84L .30-06.

I will put another one on my 6.5 Creedmoor Hunter or a 3.5-10x40 when it gets back from getting iron sights put on it.

The 2.5-8x36 will look a little more sleek, but, for me, the 3.5-10x40 is the cat's azz.

I have both of those on 84m's as well as FX3 6x42 ,SS 6X MQ, SS 10X MQ, I prefer the 6x42 if you know your shots will be close or the 6X MQ if you might have to reach out and touch something.

I've used 2-7x33, 4x33, 6x36, and 6x42 Leupolds on Montana's. They have 6x42's on them now and I doubt they will change.

Only have had Leupold's on my Kimber's.

On 84M's I've had:

6x36
2-7x33
2.5-8x36

On 84L's I've had:

6x36
2.5-8x36
3-9x40
3.5-10x40

For both my favorite is the 6x36 or 2.5-8x36.

For 84M only, the 2-7x33 is very nice too.

For 84L only, the 3-9x40 or 3.5-10X40 are fine. But I'm still prejudiced (some would say irrationally) to big scopes on light rifles.

Will be getting a 308 84M of some type in a few weeks. If it's a Classic Select (5 lbs 10 oz), Montana (5 lbs 2 oz), Green Mountain Ascent (4 lbs 13 oz), or Subalpine (4 lbs 13 oz as well), is yet to be seen. I'm a wood lover but want for lightweight. My current Savage 338WM weighs in at roughly 10 lbs 6 oz at full hunting mode unloaded. It has a 3-18x44 SF CDS Fire Dot VX-6 on it that I absolutely adore. I'm pretty well set on the 2-12x42 non-illuminated VX-6 for this new rig, but I still look at 2.5-8x36's and 2-7x33's a lot. To me, the 5.4 oz for the 2-12x42 buys a LOT of optics per ounce over the 2.5-8x36. Opinions? My wallet would certainly feel better with one of the VX-3i's or even the 2-7x33 CDS VX-2, I just love my VX-6 I have and have even considered taking on a couple more oz and getting an illuminated VX-6HD for the slightly better coatings, illumination, included alumina covers (will add $90-$110 to whatever scope I choose, but included with the VX-6HD), and throw lever. This will be the rifle I hunt with 90% of the time as the 338 was/is perfect for open country but the new land I've just gotten is swampy and thick and requires one to be ready while walking, which is really hard with a 10 1/2 lb rifle ha!

My Kimber mountain Acsent in 280ai has a 2-12x42 VX-6 on it. It weighs 6.5 lbs. My Kimber 84m in 260 has a 3-9 VX2 on it. It also weighs 6.5 lbs. I like that weight, it's easy to shoot, not to light, but easy to carry.

Thanks! Do you think one more mm (the 2-12x42) would be too close to the barrell and warrant mediums? I have extended lows on my Savage with the 3-18x44 and could probably get away with extra lows if not for the eye piece.

Currently a 2.5X8 on my 7-08, but may switch to a 1.75X6 when I swap the barrel out to a .338 Fed.

84M Montana 7mm-08, Talley LW lows, with a Leupold FXII 6x36 w/LRD reticle. It works to the distance I'm gonna shoot.

I have a 84m that wears a VX-3i 3.5-10x40 in Talley Lows. Just ordered a Adirondack that I am going to try a Vari-X III 1.75-6x32 (shorty) in extra lows on (if I have enough tube length....)

Room for BC caps with the lows and the 6x42?
