The men were clean shaven, or fully bearded. Clothes neat, and pressed, unless he script called for something else.
The women's hair was always perfect, unless the script called for otherwise.
Did the horses smell like,-- horses?

Ha! Probably not. .. I have noticed this too. That, and everybody running the horses at full tilt all the time, over unfamiliar terrain.

The hero & heroin were always dressed 10 times nicer than the rest of the cast.

And if a bad guy needed shot they could sling lead [pun intended] and knock him off a horse on a dead run everytime . Just an opinion but most "old" cowboy movies aren't very good . They were probably great when watching them in the 1950's though .

I've heard it said real ammunition was used in making the older flicks, as blank cartridges were considered too expensive and hard to find.

Good guys wore white hats Bad guys wore black hats Colts were good for ~35 shots Horses could run for hours Stagecoaches were only good for run-aways and tipping over Cowboy heroes would rather kiss their horse than a good-lookin' gal

When men were manly and there were no "thug life" types. When Frenchy is "Destry Rides Again" and Angela Lansbury in "The Harvey Girls" were the "bad" women.

In watching the westerns from the 1950s to 1970s, at least, has anyone else noticed that the wardrobe crew apparently hated to sew pockets into the pants they made for the cast? There are no rear pockets and very few have front pockets.

You never saw any blood when someone was shot or at the most a little ketchup on the shirt.
I remember when I was a teenager and the movie The Wild Bunch included a scene where some blood actually spurted out when Edmund O'Brien took a sniper round in the thigh. We thought that was great. I think that scene was the first time that blood spurted from a wound.
The spaghetti westerns resulted in a huge evolution in the western movie genre.

All the good guys didn't wear white hats. Bob Steele wore black hat, shirt and pants. He never shot anyone, always beat them in a fist fight. His hat never came off during fights.
Lash Larue also wore all black outfit. There were probably others I don't recall.

After a gunfight with about 70 shots fired with revolvers, they would in fact have had to yell at the top of their voice for anyone else to hear them. muzzle blast would have been crippling..
also, the horses that could gallop full out for 5 miles w/o any problems...

Well trained horses but most of the heroes could do a better job of tying them up. The poor beasts were probably too exhausted from 5 mile gallops to want to wander off.

I'd still take Marshall Matt Dillon over all the rest.
He made being a lawman during cowboy times a good thing.

I'd like to have one of those Colt SAA's that shoots 20-30 times without reloading though.
