what is P.T ? they only said Piriformis syndrome.
P. Physical Therapy. Find one in the yellow pages or ask around. If I was looking for a PT, I'd find the biggest PT/OT owned free standing Rehab center and give them a call. DF

Free second hand advice that works:
P.T. =- Physical Therapist. They will show you how to treat it.
For my sciatica: At bedtime I lay on my back and pull one knee to my chest a few times and then the other.
For hip pain I lay on my side and lift one leg to the side some a few times.
These stretching exercises have eliminated my pain.

1. If you have a fat wallet on the side w/pain relocate it.
2. See a well trained Physical Therapist and learn to stretch and exercise, walking is magic.
3. Actually do what the PT advises and exercise 6 days/week.
4. Set an alarm and get up and move and stretch every 60 minutes.
This effort will change your life.

I use an inversion table . It really helps me. Lumbar radiculopathy, "pinched nerve from disc", probably. Sacroiliac/Piriformis syndrome, not so much. Different conditions, different solutions. Gotta know what you have, need a diagnosis. Then, a treatment plan... DF

Drats…I just bought the inversion table with the hope of some relief.
Mine only gets real bad when I'm bending over as in working in the garden for extended periods. Bending over is not on my menu.

mike r I went to a front pocket wallet and often keep it in a shirt pocket. Nothing but handkerchiefs in back pockets. When I drove truck the wallet went on the dash on my way into the cab.

In a word, surgery. Been there 3xs What do you do when the doctors all say surgery is not an option. My last neurosurgeon told me he would not cut on my unless he was at least 90% he could improve my life and he was 99.99% sure he would do nothing or make it worse. That was in 2004 and I learned to live with it.

I've found the Sacroiliac/Piriformis diagnosis both misdiagnosed a lot when it wasn't the issue; and missed a lot also.

I've found the Sacroiliac/Piriformis diagnosis both misdiagnosed a lot when it wasn't the issue; and missed a lot also. Yep. I've seen disc surg for disc disease when SI/ Piriformis was the actual pain generator, disc was just a red herring. Didn't solve the problem, wasn't the problem to begin with. To a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Not anti-surg, just appropriate surg. Correct diagnosis from the beginning is critical. DF

Yeah, backs and those things connected can be a porridge of entwined entities -- probably one of the reasons some 30% of those who've had back surgery have recurrent back pain.
Surgery is sometimes absolutely necessary but it's the last door you open.

If one has back surg for back pain, one may be disappointed.
Leg pain, loss of muscle strength, loss of muscle mass, surg probably the only option.

i have been in pain for a few weeks (Piriformis Syndrome) , Doctors don't subscribe pain meds any more.
any one have a do it yourself cure for this ?
P. Since you live in CA you should be able to get some medical pot. Have you ever tired it? I have 2 friends who are in constant pain. One had a severe back injury that required 2 surgeries and is in constant pain from nerve damage. The other friend has severe arthritis and is disabled. Prescription pain meds don't provide enough pain relief to make them worth taking. What does give them enough pain relief to sleep through the night is pot. Pot brownies or cookies are much better than smoking a joint because the pain relief lasts through the night.

If you need surgery and don't get it soon enough you'll probably end up with all the problems you describe. I had herniated disc about 20 years ago (I've had 3 so far) back when I couldn't see a back doctor without being referred by my GP. My GP sent me for X-rays and pronounced that there was nothing wrong with my back. He told me to take OTC pain meds and prescribed some exercises that I was unable to do because of the pain. After he tortured me for over 4 months I starting losing strength in my left leg and it would actually collapse sometimes. My left thigh muscle was also going numb. I told the GP what was happening and he finally gave me a reference to a back doctor. When the back doctor saw my symptoms he was amazed that my GP had waited so long to give me a referral. I got an MRI the next morning and a cortisone shot directly into the herniated disc the following morning. The pain went away almost immediately and I haven't had a problem with that disc since then. I slowly regained the strength in my left leg but the numbness is still there. The back Doc said if I had waited much longer the loss of strength may have been permanent also. He wrote my GP a nasty letter and I found another GP.
