Thanks, hunting1! I haven't been down to 15 since I took a nice cow in 2013 so I'm looking forward to a chance at a bull.

You've still got time to put in for WY antelope, if you just want to kill something besides your weiner this year.

SockPuppet--I'm not sure, it says ELK-1-103, outfitter said "you drew a Unit 2 tag, good area".

My daughter will be doing her first deer hunt that same week in 2B. Here is the map: NM Units If you're using an outfitter I'm sure he'll do his homework prior to your hunt. I haven't historically seen a lot of elk in 2A (especially that early in the year), so in my opinion 2B and 2C would be the better units. The weather will also have an impact as it can often still be fairly warm in late October.

Chased a big bull 4 years ago in the Laguna Seca mesa area and had groups coming in on water nightly. Watch for snakes, had a little guy strike my boot and a big one slither through camp. Saw more animals south of 64 in the forest and managed to call some bulls over the fence from the Jicarilla. But be mindful of the border.
We will be hunting the late season in 2b this year for deer. My partner drew and Elk tag in unit 2 his third choice. He will be doing scouting for us at that time

SockPuppet--thanks, I'm not familiar with New Mexico at all. I was trying to book a 10/1 rifle bugle hunt and found one on a 12,000 acre ranch, the only thing is you had to stay at a hotel an hour away, I wanted to stay at a cabin on the ranch. While looking around for another hunt someone booked the last bugle hunt (only 2 hunters on the ranch) so I called a couple of outfitters and this what I ended up with. I'm happy and looking forward to hunting New Mexico.
I'm a little worried about what sidepass said, I don't like snakes!

Didn't mean to scare you, hunted the area several times and never thought about or seen one. 2 snakes in one day got my attention, climbed to the top of pottery mt and looked down as that little guy got my boot. Then that 5 footer slithered through camp and made me very aware,Bought some snake gaiters for the area but drew a late hunt and don't think I'll need them this year.

Sounds like you had a run of bad rattler luck. I've spent a lot of time in the Carson and seen only a few rattlers. Like most, they tend to not want anything to do with you. The small ones and large (6'+) seem to be the exception but I doubt you'll see any of them. The larger ones, in my experience, tend to make plenty of noise if you get too close.

Like Jon said, that's a real long drive . If you cut across the jicarilla, and come out on 537, about the 24mm, you can cut in, and start at the southern most part of 2b, in the Carson NF. Lots of critters behind all the locked gates.

Hunted deer there a couple of times. Saw only a few deer, but beau-coup elk every day. Tried for almost ten years to draw a tag but finally gave up and went back to applying in the Gila for my first choice.

Lots of critters behind all the locked gates. That's the road from Ojito across the Schultz ranch and it hits 537 at MM22, not 24. Unless you take J20 across the Jicarilla where it hits 537 at MM14.
My g8-g8 uncle was Barney Riggs. Google and read about him. He roamed around the southwest, mainly west Tx and Az and NM territory. History credits him with from 9 - 12 men he killed, not counting Mexicans and Indians. Family lore has it at 18.

Right. Mm14 , down to mm24, to enter the Carson. Schmitz ranch iirc. Do the dog leg jog at ojito, but that's a long drive from Lindrith to that turn off to cut across. Right across from the post office, in Lindrith, will cut across to the 14mm.
