Mr Forbes called yesterday to inform me that he had completed a total upgrade to my CLR, BUT neither he, nor Talley, could provide a set of rings that would successfully mount a Leupold Euro (4x12 30mm) I had provided.
I need to get back with him with some sort of resolution.
My first thought is to pick up a straight 6x Leupold FX3. My 2nd thought is to use a Leupold Anniversary 3x9.
I have a couple of the 3x9's and like them very much. Were they a dull finish, they would be perfect.
Curious if anyone had a thought, or 2, they might share on this, as I try to come up with a bright solution.

I currently own 3 6x36 M8s and 2 FX-II 6x36s and have zero reason to spend more money and add a few ounces to the rifle for the FX-3.

The FX-II is smaller, lighter, and for me there's no real benefit to the FX-3 from what I can tell.

I've had both, but now ONLY have the 6x36s left.

If the CLR action is the same as a M28 (I think) you can get a pic rail (0 or 20 MOA) for it which should allow you to mount most any scope with the right rings.

May be a reason Mr. Forbes didn't mention these?

Curious as to why they couldn't mount it. Was it the tube length that was the problem?

I've owned both, and compared both side-by-side in actual field conditions, in low and bright light... I can see NO difference between the 6x36 FXII and 6x42 FX3. Most (especially those of us over 55) can't take advantage of an exit pupil larger than the 6x36's 6mm.

The 6x42 is heavier, larger, has more limited mounting spacing, is more expensive, and provides no real-world field benefit.

Aside from all that it's great.

I'd buy a new matte VX2 3-9X40 (11.2 oz) and give it a whirl. Not even 2 ounces heavier than the FXII (10 oz), and it mounts well on most rifles. I could hunt with a 6X and probably be happy, but I like variable power scopes.

My model 28 now wears a Vortex HD LH 3-10X40 and I like it better than any Leupold I've ever owned!

I am guessing from your post, for a couple of reasons, that you want a pair of Talley Lightweight rings for your rifle. But at least two companies have made bases for the CLR/NULA action, Talley and Weaver. Those bases and a set of rings to fit 'em would weigh a little more than Talley Lightweights, but not much (I know this because I've used both on various NULA's), and would provide plenty of mounting options.

Why is that? If you don't mind me asking.

You could use Weaver bases and any brand of 30mm Weaver or Weaver-style rings that move you.

I have the same opinion, I like the FX-3 6x42mm but love the little 6x36mm.

I really like this scope, the glass is on par with my VX6 it is smaller and more compact on a lightweight rifle and I love the G4 reticle not to mention the dialing has been spot on so far.

The scopes I generally consider include the VX3i 2.5x8, 3.5x10, and VX6 2-12. I think any of these would fit.

The rest of the story...should you be interested. Got over my 30mm kick and had Mr. Forbes return the rifle with 1" rings. Bought a Leupold FXII 6x36 scope with the LR reticle, similar to that found on the Leupold Century scope. Total weight, including a Levy's sling, is right at 7#. Have had it out twice and could not be more delighted with the Forbes improvements. The new stock has an excellent feel in my hand. Still shoots near 1 " groups with 180 gr PP Partitions over 76 gr of RL22. Shot trials with 180 gr ETips, with 2 gr less powder, found that they shot well, grouping about a half inch lower, at 100 yards. Next outing will be at longer range.
Shot both sessions with only a golf shirt. While there is no doubt when the gun goes bang, the stock/recoil pad combo makes this a nicely tolerable package to shoot, and it is a delight to carry. Still getting used to the new trigger.
Would also add that Melvin Forbes could not be more pleasant to deal with. He knows his stuff.

Excellent choice and while I wouldn't want a fly weight 300WM why throw the balance off with excess scope and mount weight? A light 300 that is still tolerable to shoot is about as versatile as it gets.
