We cleaned out my late grandfather's shop today and I grabbed an old file of his. I'd like to have it made into a useful knife that I can carry/use on my future hunts so hes always with me.

I am on a limited budget but I would love to make this happen.

Anyone here do this sort of stuff?

Dan Thompson....DT Knives...is a member here.

He makes a lot of knives from files.

I have one...it's a very nice piece and the price was reasonable...nice guy too.

I make plenty of file knives. What is the brand on the file? That is a critical factor in how well the steel work up into a useful blade. Nicholson, Black Diamond, Save Edge...usually good steel to work with. Especially if it's older, say 40+ years old or so.

Post the brand name if you can...pm me if you'd like to discuss a knife.

Here's a few I've done in the past:

I do that kind of thing. I like the old school stuff and the story behind it.

I tinkered with some files a few years ago.
I made 6 or 7 and gave them away to friends.
This is the one I kept.
