When I lived in Maine I'd pick up some fresh scallops right off the divers boat and eat them raw while drinking cold beer. Don't know if it was the best thing ever but few things could top it.

Depends on timing and conditions. At various times the best thing I ever ate was a peach, or a pear. other times it may well have been a tomato. A steak hot off the grill rates right up there, and the right plate of biscuits and gravy with eggs over medium on top would certainly take top spot on many mornings. My wife's fried potatoes with butcher shop hot dogs is worthy of mention. My own chili verde is a contender.

How would you pick? Depends how hungry I was at the time and what time of day it was and how long I had it last as to what foods stand out.
Wife or Mom's homemade peach cobbler

A fresh grilled red snapper sandwich I had at a seaside restaurant in ocean city MD

Braised rabbit and squirrel
About any dessert my wife makes but her triple chocolate cake is probably my favorite.

Not your favorite food...the BEST thing you ever ate. (Be polite, we 're talking about food.  ) You do know your qualifications took some of the fun out of it, right? Ok, in spirit it was asked ... I went on an 7 day backpacking trip at the end of high school ... early 80s. I had oatmeal, ramen, and jerky. I ran out of jerky on day 4 and oatmeal on day 5. The BEST thing I have ever had was the cheeseburger I ate when I got home. Tom

Some kind of grilled meat (could have been steak, could have been country ribs, I don't remember) with baked potato, salad and garlic bread. It was right after a 6 day backpack mountain goat hunt that I lost 10 pounds on.

was at a Special Forces Demonstration at Ft Bragg when I was about 15 or so.
..
The G/Beret fixes items served like h'ordevours... after you taste it they would tell ya what you just ate.
the demonstration was showing that the human body can live off about anything... but they were certainly
well prepared.
