I am looking to get another chainsaw.

I currently have a Stihl 029 that's older but not seen a lot of use. I am concerned it isn't oiling properly and have a number of trees this year in and around the yard that I need to drop and cut up.

I am looking at getting a second saw that I could also take to the cabin in the bush to have a reliable saw while there.

Local store is having a sale and I am torn over which model would be the best buy for me. This store sells Husqvarnas and my choices are:

240 @ $200
435 @ $280
445 @ $340

As I understand it, the only difference between the 435 and 445 is bar length. I am thinking I could buy the 435 and spend an extra $60 and get a longer bar and chain.

Anyone have any experience with the 240? Smaller saw and definitely a lot less money. Other experiences or suggestions?

For clarification, I typically need to cut down a few trees a year. Probably have 8-10 to drop this year as well as trimming back some dead in some bigger trees.

Look up the specifics. Looks like 38 cc vs 41 cc vs 46 cc.

Some of the cheap Husqy's are nothing more than gussied up Poulans. May be the case with that 240. I'm sure it'll do the job, but you can likely get a Stihl ms170 or a small Echo for the same or cheaper, not to mention, the comparable Poulan Pro would likely run $100-$129.

I also sell these, the 240 is a good little saw, uses a smaller chain, and lacks power compared to the 445. The 445 would come closest to your Stihl, but a better choice would be a 455.

Not the answer you were looking for, BUT
Fix the oil system on the STIHL and roll on!

What length bar do you want to pull? The 435 is a 41cc saw rated at 2.2 hp, the 440 is also a 41cc but rated at 2.4 hp. I don't know bar lengths they come with but I wouldn't want to use a bar longer than 16" on either saw. Those are relatively small saws so you don't want to burden the little power they have with a long bar. I'd put the extra $60 into additional loops of chain vs a longer bar and chain.

Whether or not you get a new saw, I'd take the 029 to a dealer to give it a tune up and see if the oiler is performing properly. If you're looking for a saw comparable to the 029 then you should be looking at a husky 455.

Look at the Echo 590, 60 cc pro saw build as in magnesium crankcase, not a plastic one. Less than $400. Will absolutely blow away anything Stihl and Husky in that price range.

I have this saw, it'll give a man a workout and keep kicking his azz.

I would definately have the 029 looked at. Is it not basically running even -oil/gas?

Thanks guys.

Couple answers to your questions.

The 029 runs like a champ. I am not confident the oiler is operating properly. I've cleaned the ports etc. but I still don't think its oiling the bar adequately. I am thinking of knocking down one tree and see how it runs. By that I mean, see if the bar gets overly hot or see if its oiling the chain.

This oiler problem got me to thinking that i should maybe have a second saw. That happened to coincide with the local shop having a sale. I looked at the mid level saws such as the 455, but for a second/backup saw, I am not sure I need that level of a saw. You are right that I wouldn't regret it in the performance area, but I am thinking it is over kill.

Maybe I will just run the stihl into the local shop and have the mechanic there there I talked to about the oil pump have a look at it.

But I still want a backup saw.

There's a pretty good incentive on the husky 550's with the fall days sale.

I have the 600 model, a slight step up from the 590. I have 0 problems running it all day and I am not a young man anymore, will be 61 later this year.

Both of my Stihls run basically 1:1, bar oil vs. fuel except my 021 which has a oil case or bar oiling system leak, it now runs about1:.75
But I am guessing you should be using a tank of each fairly equally.
And I agree with you, having two saws is a good thing[I have 3 and am happy LOL]

Didn't mean the saw was rough to run, they are cutting SOB's! Cut a couple truckloads of 20" black locust yesterday and it was still going strong at the end of the day without a hiccup.

And while the others compare chainsaws, you show that you're the biggest a$$ho1e of the bunch with no competition.
