The where you hit ‘em is way more important than the what you hit ‘em with. How true.
We may know the time Ben Carson lied, but does anyone know the time Hillary Clinton told the truth?

A .22 will work just fine on pits. Just don't use the quiet specialty stuff. Their shoulders are a bit thick for them.

M45 Quad Mount would be better.

I think there are three scenarios:
1. You get surprise attacked while out walking. Your CCW gun is best. A 9mm should be sufficient.
2. The pit is trespassing on your (rural) property. A .223 with any bullet suitable for small deer.
3. The pit is attacking someone outside and others are trying to get it off. You have time to run outside and the range will be close: 12 gauge pump with BB shot. For convenience, I'd carry a S&W Governor or Taurus "Judge". 6 shots with a mix of 410 shot shells and 45 Colt.

I'd go for the back of the head just below the skull. Pith the pit.

I can testify that a sharp hard kick under the short ribs can cause a Corso Cano to let go of a gentle female gsp for a few precious seconds. Then while your gsp is hauling ass down the alley headed for home and "Killer"catches its breath and resumes the chase you can jump in your GMC and give chase. When you catch up to Killer and honk your horn and it looks back over its shoulder while not moving over and grinning at you, just hit the gas and run over its ass. It sounds kind of like when youre chasing a coyote across the mixed grass/mesquite priarie and go over a big old hidden, rotting stump- thump, bump, thump but more pleasing, knowing you wont get a blowout.
Thats when the Mexican chasing all of you down the alley decides it wasnt a good idea to let Killer out the back gate to see what Killer would do to your dog. He also gets a quick lesson in why obedience traning is worthwhile.
No ammo wasted.

00 Buckshot works real well from 3 feet. Good friend of mine had his daughter attacked by a neighbors pit and simply rode drove up to the street, the dog came charging out barking and he unloaded. He did end up paying a small fine though

Colt 1911 .45ACP for all three scenarios.
Never be without one. Whatever gun is handy at the moment. I believe IndyCA35 had a pretty good selection picked out. Big mean livestock and game killing dogs running loose are a serious issue where I raise cattle. I always wear a .357 Model 66 at the farm, and always keep a scoped rifle (.30-06 bolt or .223 AR) in the truck or on the ATV. I don't routinely carry a shotgun but I do know that a load of #3 steel will do the job at 30 feet. The scoped rifles of any decent caliber are absolutely necessary due to the fact that 200 or more yards is as close as you can get sometimes.

I suppose -- being old fashioned -- my old Colt's Lightweight Commander .45 ACP loaded with nine 230 grains Hydra Shok cartridges will have to do. L.W.

Just did an appraisal that included several Velo Dog handguns. Three kinds of ammo were available way back then including wood, clay, and lead bullets. Intent was originally to discourage, not kill. Guess I better read Wiley's article to see if i can learn more.
