Isn't Gov Ryan of Ill the same guy who doesn't want Illini carrying concealed?

So the good folks of Illinois can't carry concealed and then the Gov releases dozens of death row inmates to prey on them.

What happens in a state like Illinois (and I can name others) that makes the people lie down and take that kind of crap anyway? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Hey Y'all, he didn't set em free, he commuted their death sentence to life without parol. If he had set any free, he would be a dead man!

Tim,

Back nearly 33 years ago my brother-in-law was murdered. The guy convicted got 4 served 4 years for 1st degree murder. That ass Ryan really pissed me off. I know he didn't let them go but these are people that should have died for their crimes.

Thanks for the comments.

Norm, sorry to hear about your brother. I believe life should be protected and held sacred by all; justice requires life for life, nothing more and nothing less. To not hold those accountable for taking a life with the taking of theirs, cheapens the life of the victim and increases the life of the guilty. Too bad more of us in this country don't understand the basic concept of justice. FWIW, I rather suspect things will "heat up" for the Gov. on the other side of the grave. Todd

Wonder who is going to commute the sentence on the victims of those killers who had their death sentence commuted?

Well folks, he DID set four of them loose.

"Ryan on Friday pardoned four other death row inmates, saying the men had been tortured by police into making false confessions.

A few hours later, Aaron Patterson ate his first steak dinner in 17 years, while Madison Hobley and Leroy Orange spent time with their families as free men. "

That's exactly the point Boggy. I escorted my wife, her sister, her mom, her dad, and Jim's new widow into the funeral chapel to see him for the first time after his murder. The anguish of these five people (and me and many others who knew what a fine young man Jim was) over the years deserved more justice that seeing two of the perps walk.

Also I gave Deputy Emery Summers, who was seriously wounded in the same shootout, my undying gratitude for the 110 grain SuperVel JHP he put between the left ear and left eye of the actual shooter.

You just had to be there.

I happen to be against the death penalty. Too many mistakes have happened, and too many cops beat confessions out of people to allow the state to do this to people. At least with a life sentence, you can still work on proving your innocence, and eventually get out if you didn't do the crime. I have no problem with perps getting shot to death at the scene, because when someone is shot in the act of attempted murder there is little question of guilt. In that case, death is the appropriate punishment.

I know this is not going to be a popular view here, so I'm ready for a pile on.

Hawk,

I understand your position and it isn't unreasonable. But in the case of eye witnesses and incontrovertible evidence I think the death penalty is reasonable.

My problem with life without parole is that there remains a possibility that a slick lawyer or liberal judge will at some time work to or allow a convicted murderer to go free.

One thing about the death penalty. It prevents a known murderer from repeating his/her crime.

I am in favor of limiting the death penalty to certain narrowly defined conditions that would prevent execution of an innocent person.

However, like my dad used to say "If you go where trouble is likely and there is trouble regardless of whether you're are involved or not your ass is mine."

Unfortunately, for the folks of IL, the guy who is replacing Ryan is as antigun as Ryan is. As long as chicago has anything to say about it, the state will continue to slide further and further away from any gunowners rights.

I'm not opposed to the death penalty for moral reasons, partly because as a Christian I believe that dying is not nearly the worst thing that can happen to somebody.

But I must admit that the concept of giving the government the power to kill its own subjects and get away with it--that makes me nervous whether we're talking about killer cops like Lon Horiuchi and David Hawn and Eric Hall or government-sanctioned execution.

Barak, you got that right. We must never forget Ruby Ridge. Every school kid should know that situation by heart. This is what happens when the government doesn't fear its own citizens. Imagine what they'd be so bold to do if we all had our guns confiscated.

More fallout.

THE HAGUE, Netherlands - Saying it had exhausted other alternatives, Mexico appealed to the World Court on Tuesday to stop the execution of 51 of its citizens in the United States.

Mexico had initially sought to spare 54 citizens, but said at the start of hearings that three were removed from death row by Illinois Gov. George Ryan, who this month commuted the sentences of 167 inmates, mostly to life in prison, over concerns about capital punishment in his state.

Don't worry; I'm sure the government will graciously provide us with reminders at periodic intervals.

2D,

Mexico has been after us for longer than Ryan's travesty to commute Mexican citizen death penalties.

I suggest that Mexico keep her people at home. Informing those that still choose to come that they will be subject of the US legal system.
