Watching the skies dance must have been a great sight. Was this last week, as I had read there was to be higher solar activity?

Yes, it was last week. This winter it has been cloudy most nights when the Auroras are showing. Then last week the sky was nice and clear, and still that way this week. But unlike last week, the Auroras are not active.
A photo does not really show the amazing Auroras light show. Sometimes they are just still and smooth light beams across the sky, but some other times they move quite fast and roll like the waves on calm water. Folks up here call it "dancing Northern Lights" for good reasons. A video filmed with a high end video camera would show how fast the auroras move sometimes.
