Hope to be heading to North Dakota in June for a way past due family reunion. Now that I'm retired I have a little extra time on my hands, so I would like to take a leisurely drive back and hunt some prairie dogs and possibly Coyotes in Montana and do a bit of fly fishing in the great trout streams along the way. Would anyone here be willing to point me in the right direction to find some Pdogs for a day or two? I think I can figure out the fishing- at least I hope so.... TIA, Bob

One option on PDs is the Rosebud reservation in South Dakota. Contact them directly. They require a guide.
Inshot there last May with pretty decent results.

Been quite a few years since I was there, but the Belknap reservation used to be a good spot with easy access.

Last I heard, and it caused me to quit going to the Rosebud, they had decided to go "lead-free" on the reservation. I quit going, as I have too much loaded ammo with lead.

One thing to remember is that in MT there are no license requirements for prairie dogs or coyotes. That said you still need landowner permission to hunt them. As a rule, most ranchers would be glad you showed up to shoot them, but some might charge a day rate for doing it. Time is your friend if you have some to spare, as you will have no problem finding places after you arrive in the area. An information center can at least furnish information on gun shops and taxidermy shops in the area, and they in turn can furnish information on hunting locations. Don't hesitate to ask at the information center also. That worked very well for me, admittedly i was alone, and didn't have 4 guys with me when i did the inquiring, with 2 of them holding a can of Bud light. lol

Another recommendation for Bill Perkins if you decide to go guided. If you plan to shoot PD's only a day or two, I would recommend going with an outfitter, as otherwise you can waste at least day finding a place to shoot.
I know another PD outfitter in that part of the state, but he's also a rancher and doesn't do as much PD guiding in June as Bill. I believe he's also pretty booked up already with repeat customers.

Good advice from MD. You can spend a lot of time trying to find a dog town, it is easy to miss one just over the next ridge.

Just itching to try this sport for over 20 years. Now retired, trying to figure out which state to drive to and get after it.

Just itching to try this sport for over 20 years. Now retired, trying to figure out which state to drive to and get after it. I felt that way as well. Went on my first one in 2011 and again in 2017. I'd love to go again every year but logistics and not being retired make it difficult. However, having done it two times, I've learned enough now that I could do it own my own without a guide given I had the time. First steps are to plan a date and then research to make the trip enjoyable.

What John said...well worth the money and HARD to find a place on your own and shoot for free anymore .... LOOK at Wyoming....hint.

Sheister while you are in North Dakota stop by the Fish & Game and pick up the free book showing all the p-dog towns on public and private land. The private land has names and phone numbers to call if you want to shoot there. The maps will even show Reservation land. Head down to Prairie Knights casino and eat dinner and try the slots. Get up the next morning and shoot p-dogs all day. Doesn't get much better than that. P-dogs are about 15 minutes north of the casino.

There's a big field of them in Fort Collins, CO right next to Walmart. Might want to have a suppressor as folks living on three sides of it may get a bit testy.
Walmart has good prices on .223's if you run out.
