Any suggestions on a very small 22LR? I've seen the Chipmunk ones that run about $150, I'd like to stay around that price point.

It seems there was another maker of these ultra small 22's and if one was any better than the other I'd be interested. At $150 I know you get what you pay for, this will be a starter rifle for a lot of kids and I don't want to spend a ton of dough.

Believe it or not the Rossi Braztech. is a nice one. It breaks open like a shotgun and you can even get a 22 410 swap barrel kit., that one should be in you price range, the synthetic on should be right at or a but under $100.00. I have one that I changed the rear sight on and it will shoot 1 MOA at 50 yards.

Cricket, or Henry boys rifle both fit your category. They are suitable for small kids (4-7 year old typically). Slightly above that is the CZ Scout, at about twice the price and and more than twice the quality.

Hope that helps

Any decent quality bolt action or single shot .22 rifle is a good start. Stay away from semi autos unless the kid knows proper trigger control.

I was also going to recommend the CZ Scout, or another CZ452 with a youth-stock.

But a $150 limit really constrains things.

The CZ Scout takes a blank-magazine that limts the rifle to single-shot status, until its replaced with a 5 or 10rd mag.

By the same token, a really nice adult-size M452 could be acquired for your youngun', and turned into a single-shot by using the 'Scout magazine' until you trusted him or her with the 5-10 rounder.

If you like the Ruger M10/22, they brought out (new for '2006) last year a youth-gun with a 16 1/4inch barrel. Except for balance and personal tastes, that's all the barrel a .22LR needs to maximize performance. An adult stock could replace the youth-stock later, but again your $$-limit is busted.

Too bad the Cricket-size rifles can't be put into an adult-size stock. At least I'm not aware of anyone who sells one.

A .22LR shoots best with a 14 to 16inch tube, altho the NFA'34 Gun Law stipulates that a rifle have a minimum 16inch barrel to be legal with no special requirements.

For a lever-gun I've always been impressed with the many ergonomic features incorporated into the design of the Browning BL22, but that rifle is pricey!! And a stock would probably have to be sacrificed (cut) to a youth-length. But it one helluva .22 rifle!

51 years ago, my father bought a 22 for me. He wouldn't consider anything that had a cocking knob that had to be pulled by small fingers. To get an idea of the difficulty a child will likely have with a cocking knob, pull it back with your pinkie and ring finger, instead of your stronger fingers.
I bought a Marlin 15Y for my younger daughter.
