I have a Marlin 30/30 and I want to mount a loopie vx2 1x4 on it. Those little scopes are short and it seems the front ring is hard to get right sometimes. I called loopie many moons ago and they said it is wrong to have any part of the ring forward of their gold-ring.
In any case what is the best base/ring combination for the Marlin 336 and this short scope?
Thanks
Howdy

A lot of the guys on the Marlin Forum use Weaver Quad Locks. That's what I have on my Guide Gun. I'm not sure if they work with that little scope or not. They are less than $12.00 for the rings and base at Walmart.

If I gave someone $12 for a set of Quadlocks, I'd expect $10 in change.........I can't imagine anyone having to back a VXII up so far to their eye that the "gold ring" be intruded upon to to obtain proper eye-relief on a 336.......Are you over 5ft tall? Use a Weaver style 1-piece bottom rail and one of the many various compatible rings, maximum flexibility will be yours.....

The Quad Locks work great. I know a fellow that has them on 15 Marlins. Here's my Leupold 2X7, and a set of Weaver Quad Lock Rings.

I dont know what the "best" set up is, but I use a Weaver one piece mount, and low weaver or super low burris zee rings on my Marlins with 1-4 Leupolds. Works for me.

The Warne Maxima bases and QD rings work well for me on my Marlin 1895 with a Leupold Vari-X II 1-4x20mm. Essentially the same rifle and scope as you have (configuration wise) and the same bases and rings work on the 336.

Buy a Leupold base (Weaver style). They have them at Wal-Mart. They have an extra cross-slot for the front ring as compared to a Weaver base.
I use regular Weaver rings, not the quad-locks.

I have that same scope on my Marlin 30-30. Used a Weaver style base, (don't recall who made it), and a pair of low Weaver rings. Been on there now since 2002. I like it. That's a great scope for a 30-30 in my humble estimation. Don't have any part of my front ring over the golden ring. I've heard that you weren't supposed to have a ring that far forward but I don't know if it's true or not. All I know is that it wouldn't look right to me.
