The .357 magnum still is ... what it was and what it can still do with good shots .... not to take anything away from the .357 .... but newer and larger caliber handguns have come along that are more effective than what the .357 mag.
Still if a person can not handle the recoil of the newer handguns, the .357 magnum is still available and working ... IMO

The article states that S&W wanted a 158 grain bullet at 1450 fps and that after a year of work on the cartridge winchester had the velocity over 1500 fps . Much higher than today's loads

With the increasing use of aluminum in engines there wasn't the pressing need for bullets to shoot through cast iron and steel engine blocks such as there was in 1935 when the round was introduced....
Gunnery, gunnery, gunnery. Hit the target, all else is twaddle!

I like the 357, especially because you can shoot .38s in it. I got my ammo free when I shot with the Army service pistol team. This 27-2 has been with me for over 30 years and has accounted for more than one pig here in TX that wandered too close to my tree stand. I like 158 grain hollowpoints for most of my magnum shooting. Bob

I'm fond of .357's also. Here's two, M27-2 and a M19-3. I usually shoot a +P .38 spl load in .357 case through them. The 19 and my model 66 with full power .357 loads is not that much fun. the N frame is much more pleasant.

i have cast a couple of those bullets skeeter mentioned. the 358156 158gr and the 358429 in 170 grain. i was running the 170 a little lighter, but fired into river rock as hard as that is, it cracked the rock. we later found the gas check, looked like a copper penny. convincd me it would penetrate darn near through anything.

For an area without big bears it’s pretty tough to beat a medium or large frame 357 for a general use outdoorsman’s pistol. I prefer loads of 1000-1100 FPS with cast bullets, partly owing to the extreme blast and noise of full on 357 loads.
