Hello Gent's ,
I was at a friends house last weekend celebrating his son's birthday and I got into talking to one of his neighbors ... seems as though he owned a 10 MM auto a few years back ( Colt Delta Elite ). He sold it a few years ago to buy a S&W Sigma .40 and he had some 10MM auto ammo that he still had around . I bought everything he had for $40 ( his asking price ) ..... I was a " nice " guy and gave him $45 grin .... the deal included : 1 box of 50 PMC jacketed ( factory )ammo , 2 boxes of Black Talons , 2 boxes of first generation Hydra-Shoks and a half a box of current Hydra-Shoks .....

My question is this : How collectable are the Black Talons and 1st generation Hydra-Shocks ? ( with the boxes ) ...... being around the shooting scene for 20+ years , I remember when our good government back in the 90's was looking out for us - we the people - and banned the sale and manufacture of the Black Talons , so I know they are somewhat " collectable " ..... but how collectable ?

First Generation 10MM Hydra-Shoks :

Hey , how's it going Les ...... I know that Black Talons are still made ( slightly different design - doesn't have the " hooks " when expanded )... it goes by the name " SXT ' ......

A bud of mine has an XD . I don't like the grip angle . I like the " slant grip " - like the Luger , Hi - Standard , etc . The XD has a grip angle close to 90 degrees .....

Besides , XD's don't shoot like this ( 5 shots offhand @50 feet ) :

However , the XD's appear to be very well made .It's just a matter of " feel " for me .I do like the grip saftey though ....

Used to carry a couple of those long, skinny boxes of 44mag HydraShok's around in truck door map pocket.

Regarding Black Talons, SXT's, and Ranger T ammo from Winchester, the SXT is not the old Talon without the sharp petals when expanded. The SXT is a different design. The Ranger T is the modified Talon as mentioned by the poster above. My .10mm was a Colt Delta Elite. The very first rounds I fired from the Delta Elite were the hotrodded Norma 200 gr. FMJ flatnose. That ammo was loaded to realize the full potential of the .10mm cartridge!

As a point of history - the US government never banned Black Talons. Winchester pulled them from the market quietly and voluntarily, to disarm all the media stink. Winchester's own marketing hype may have been part of the problem, and later designs - though actually improved - were presented with a little less enthusiasm.

I'll have to check the hundreds of Gun/shooting magazines of that time period that I have ... you may be right - now that I think about it . I think Winchester did discontinue making the stuff due to the hype from the media . I remember the photos of the wound channels created in ballistic gel blocks .... pretty impressive if I remember correctly . I also have a couple magazines announcing the discontinuation ... when I have time I will check my archives .....

I'm thinking that they may have some degree of collectability due to the " hype campaign " .... they are also of a different design than the current rendition .

Les ,
I checked the current prices for 10MM brass from Midway , and the value of the brass alone is worth more than $45 ..... I'm thinking I got a smokin' deal grin ...... I'll shoot the box of 50 PMC 170 grain JHP's that came with the purchase , just because they are nothing special and I can always use more brass to reload , but the Black Talon's and first generation Hydra-Shok's - I'm going to keep in the un-fired state that they are in .....

For concealed carry , I use these :

I like the PMC 170gr Hp. Shoot great and are rather inexpensive as far as 10mm goes.

I just bought 2 of the same boxes of Federal. Found them in a going out of buisness sale for 11bucks a box.

Well, it will either be the Kimber or the Dan Wesson, as I like the 1911 style more than the Glock. laugh

I used up several boxes of Normas in my first Delta Elite. Finally got rid of it as I could never find any of my empty cases to reload. Those first Norma loads were pretty hot.

The Mayans had it right. If youre going to predict the future, its best to aim far beyond your life expectancy, lest you wind up red-faced in a bunker overstocked with Spam and ammo.
