I need some input here. I have a male 5 year old black lab, and 9 weeks ago, another black lab (female) wandered into our yard, and was obviously in heat. (I know this since I observed them "stuck" together). She had no tags or collar. A couple weeks later, her owner stopped by to see if in fact they had mated and I told him yes. The bottom line is this, she gave birth to 9 pups last week. My question is am I entitled to any of the pups, and should I have to pay? I do not run my lab in trials, but he has extensive Master Hunter and Field Champions in his bloodline. He runs her in field trials and also has extensive MH's and FC's in her line. The other owner has said I get pick of the litter, but should I have to pay and is asking for 2 pups out of the question? 2 males and 7 females on the litter.
I guess a second question is how do I find out about breeding my lab legitimately, meaning we intend to have it happen. How do I locate the owners of a female that are also looking to breed their dog?
Thanks for the info.

The only reason he is volunteering to give you a puppy is so he can use your papers to register the litter. Without registering the puppies are worth very little. Standard stud fee is one puppy or the equivalent money. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />

JMO is correct, standard stud fee is 1 puppy or equivalent. You can ask for 2, but that would be irregular.
Something else to be concerned about is whether any other dogs bred the female while she was roaming around. You witnessed one breeding, but perhaps not the only one, so the assurance that the breeders are supposed to be giving to purchasers of papered pups is somewhat lacking here.
A legitimate, or rather intentional breeding, would probably involve keeping the 2 dogs at the same place, putting them in the same kennel and witnessing a breeding once a day for a couple of days, and keeping the female confined to a kennel or otherwise unaccessable by male dogs for the duration of her heat cycle, both before and after the intentional breedings.
