Also please give us the weight when you get it. I'm guessing 9 lbs or so, with a barrel profile much like the 416s.

Well; My local gun pimp sold the one he had today. But not to me. (I passed on it.) He slugged the bore before he sold it. He said it slugged @ .410-.4105. It was stamped .450/400 3" .

By way of comparison, he also slugged a .405 Win. that he had in stock. It slugged: .412-.4125. I couldn't believe that Ruger used two different bore sizes for .40 caliber. shocked (Actually three, counting the .416s.)

Looks like GH has answered one question.

SOS,

Sorry I didn't even think to put the .400/450 on the scales. The barrel contour is the same as the .375 H&H and .405 Win. Which makes it a bit lighter than the various .416's. My SS Laminated .405 weighs in at 9.15 lbs with 2x7 Leuppie mounted. Since laminated generally is heavier than walnut, I'm guessing that the .450/400 will go between 8 and 8.5 lbs. However, that's just a guess. frown

Hi guys,

first post here. I came on looking for any info on brass, bullets and loaded ammo availability for the .450-400 3". I just got one yesterday. It was the first one I laid eyes on. Asking price was $750. The dealer didn't think to, or wasn't able to get ammo for it right away.

Mine is stamped 450/400 N.E. 3".

I'm patiently waiting for Hornady to release the hounds! crazy If it weren't for the fact that I really wanted this caliber to be made available in the No.1, I'd have probably went with a .458 Win. Mag. for the wider availabilty of components as well as loaded ammo, not to mention dies! Yikes! I had no idea that ANY dies cost that much! I can see .700 N.E.

As you know, the Hornady components aren't out yet.
Woodleigh bullets (400 soft and solid) are available at Miidway.

I saw one of these at a local dealer, while there to pick up a .45-70 No. 1 I'd had on layaway. There were no other Tropicals in stock with which to compare barrel contour. Much as I like the idea of a #1 in .450/.400, I doubt I will be able to afford one before this run is all sold out, having just paid out my .45-70, and with less available overtime to work.

The one I passed on, a buddy of mine bought. He paid just over $1K for the rifle, new set of dies and 40 pcs of Bertram brass. However, he hasn't shot it as yet, because he has no bullets. But I just might order some in for him. smile (That way I get to shoot it, too!) smile (Nothing devious about me.... )

Looks like they are leaking out of the factory. blush I'd have wagered a goodly sum that we'd not see them 'til 2008. Good thing I didn't, 'cause I'd have been wrong. frown

Hey, thanks guys. Be sure to post when you first see the hornadys hit the shelf? Otherwise, up here in Canada, we might not find out for quite a while!

This is my first post on this site though I have been reading almost daily for a couple of years. I have been following all of the posts regarding the Ruger No. 1 in 9.3x74 and .450/400 with keen interest. I picked up a 9.3 a couple of months ago at my local dealer, and he just received his first .450/400 last week. Needless to say, that one followed me home also. The 9.3 has pretty decent wood, but the .450/400 was very plain compared to most No.1's that I see. As it worked out, I was trading a No. 1 in 375 H&H that had very nice wood and was able to talk them into swapping the wood out as part of the trade. The wood swap worked great, and I had them install a brown Declerator pad while fitting the wood. I will try and post pictures of the pair when I get that part figured out. The 9.3 shoots great by the way--three shots touching at 100 yds with RL-15 and 250 Accubonds. I haven't experimented further (yet) since it shot so well with the first load tried. Now, to find components to load for the .450/400--I should have 10 rounds of Kynoch ammo arriving tomorrow, so may be able to at least sight it in this week.

Regards,
Jerry

BTW, you've come to the right place if you need info. There are some on this thread that can usually answer any #1 questions you might have(I'm not one of them) They are authorities on all things #1.

Grasshopper: I just added more information to my profile, but in answer to your question, I am in Helena, MT. The "local dealer" I referred to is the same one that JB (Mule Deer) spends a lot of time at and mentions often in his writings.
