JG,
Capital Sports sounds like a hell of a store! Hope to see it some day.

If you have access to a reasonably accurate scale, would you mind putting those 2 beauties on (one at a time) and telling us the results?

Thanks

The .450/400 ammo arrived this morning: 2 boxes w/ 5 rounds each @ $120 total for 10 rounds ($12 per trigger pull). I ran out at lunch to give it a go--only fired 5 rounds though. Seemed like more recoil than the same rifle in 375 H&H, though very tolerable. The 375 seemed to stay down on the sand bags, where this one tends to come up completely off the bags at the shot. After a quick bore sight and 1 round at 50 yds, I moved to 100 and fired the remaining 4. Rounds 2 and 3 printed about 3/4" apart which was encouraging, but round 4 dropped 3" lower and 2" left, and round 5 dropped 2" lower and 2" right of the initial two which was a little disappointing. I'm definitely anxious to try handloads.

There is a very noticeable difference in the shape of the shoulder after firing--the shoulder definitely gets blown out to match the chamber (9.3x74 shown for comparison):

Looks like I got this photo resizing figured out.

Anytime Sako--I'm kind of having fun with it. I've had a camera on my cel phone for some time now, but never found a use for it until now!

It is quite the store--it gets me in trouble frequently. They are not large with lots of inventory, but they seem to get their share of unique/interesting rifles. They always seem to have a couple of Shiloh Sharps, and sometimes a Ballard. I have had a couple of Shiloh's from them and currently have a Ballard.

I found a nice Pre64 Model 70 in 300 H&H there after looking/waiting for one for several years, then a Savage 99EG in .300 Sav. showed up and followed me home. It turns out the 300 H&H belonged to the father of a friend of mine that I just started hunting with last year. He recognized it as his Dad's old rifle as soon as he saw it. They have a CZ 550 full stock in 9.3x62 on consignment right now. If I didn't already have the same in the Lux model, plus the No.1 in 9.3x74, I'd be all over that one.

I had a digital fish scale that I used to use for weighing rifles, but it croaked and I haven't replace it. I do have a digital bathroom scale and will try that though not sure how accurate it will be.

Hey rattler, you would have been safe--it never made it to the showroom floor so you wouldn't have seen it had you stopped in. They have had two on order for some time and I had my name down to reserve one. When I read on here that they were starting to ship, I went in and asked Dave if he had heard when they might see theirs. He said it just so happens one just showed up without any paperwork and they didn't know where it came from. They hadn't even taken it out of the box to look at it--it was just sitting in the back room. He brought it out, opened the box and it was a done deal. We just needed the gunsmith to confirm he could swap the wood from my 375 which just took some minor fitting.

How often are you in Helena? Definitely look me up next time you come through--I'll make time to meet with you. Hopefully I can track down loading components and get some load work done, and if you are going over McDonald pass, maybe meet at the range there and shoot it.

Jerry,

Thanks for posting your location. I'm always curious where the folks that frequent these forums live. And as I travel a bit, I've been fortunate to have met several.

I'm planning a prarie dog safari for next June and may well make it a point to stop at Capitol Sports.

I've had a 9.3x74R now for several years. I never thought Ruger would ever make it, so I had a custom built with a tapered octagon barrel. Couldn't pass up the 1-S, tho', so now I have two. smile Love those #1's!

Savuti, best I can come up with for weight on the bathroom scale is 7.0-7.1 lbs (9.3x74) and 7.8-7.9 lbs (.450/400). That seems lighter than I would have expectd, but if memory serves, the 375 H&H with the same wood was right at 8 lbs, so maybe the bigger hole in the same barrel contour makes the difference.

I'm thinking of buying one on gunbroker. I hate to do the paperwork and the wait, however, I have to wonder how long before retailers get them here in Canada.

Wow! In the space of 2 days I've managed to snag both a No 1 450-400 and a Hawkeye African. Should have them in hand a week from Monday. Now the long wait begins...........

Life is good.
