Please don't think I am raining on anyone's parade here, but you might want to do a little research on CH4D if you are considering their dies. I looked at them in 6-06 because they were inexpensive and quickly available, but found several bad reports about their quality. Ultimately I chose to stay away. To be clear - I'm not knocking their product as I have never used them myself - just suggesting that you check for yourself prior to spending the money. This is too cool a round and rifle to have a problem with dies. Whatever you do - good luck and enjoy them!

Hey stanimal. I haven't used them but know someone that does and they think they are the cat's meow. What kind of problems were they having? Thanks, reflex264

Seemed like more recoil than the same rifle in 375 H&H, though very tolerable. The 375 seemed to stay down on the sand bags, where this one tends to come up completely off the bags at the shot. After a quick bore sight and 1 round at 50 yds, I moved to 100 and fired the remaining 4. Rounds 2 and 3 printed about 3/4" apart which was encouraging, but round 4 dropped 3" lower and 2" left, and round 5 dropped 2" lower and 2" right of the initial two which was a little disappointing. I'm definitely anxious to try handloads.

There is a very noticeable difference in the shape of the shoulder after firing--the shoulder definitely gets blown out to match the chamber (9.3x74 shown for comparison):

Looks like I got this photo resizing figured out.

I have been studying this picture. If that's how those guns are chambered I would be looking for a set of custom dies. I have to wonder if they are headspacing from the rim or the shoulder. reflex264

The guys I talked to spoke of very rough internal finishes and not such great dimensional control. Both of them said they would never buy another product from CH4D so it raised a red flag with me. Please keep in mind this is all second hand - I have no experience with the products so I don't want to bash them myself. Just thought it was worth mentioning as I appreciated someone else doing the same for me when I was looking at the 6-06 dies. If you know people who are happy with them (or just want to try them yourself) - I hope you have perfect results.

I will look into it further. Thanks for the heads up. I am debating the next big bore purchase and haven't ordered a 450/400 yet. Just got the .416 Rigby #1 and was thinking about a CZ in .505 Gibbs. reflex264

Progress! just got a call from Grafs that my backorder for Hornady 450-400 brass can now be filled.

The No 1 should be here Friday or Monday...........
I love it when a plan comes together!

Thanks again for posting; seems to be very few who know what the timeline is. Glad you have a source there.

God I wish companies would quit throwing the brass production bone to the worst brass company in the world. Why dont RP pick up some of these contracts so that you can reload it an outrageous # of times. Oh like twice. Hornady, way to brittle

So who makes Hornady brass?
I agree it's nice to get more than a couple loads from your brass. We'll have to wait and see how well this stuff holds up.
BUT, at $0.58 vs $5.20 a piece for A-Sqare, I can live with abbreviated case life.

Maybe someone like Jamison can be persuaded to produce it, they already list the 3 1/4" version.

BTW, anybody know which shell holder will work for the 450-400 3"? The rim will be too thick to use the holder for the longer case.

Not sure what SH to use. Maybe when one pays $300CAN for a set of dies, they throw the SH in? wink

The .348 Win case is close to the dimensions of the .450/.400 3", to wit: Base Dia. .348 = .553"; .450/400 = .545"

Rim Dia. .348 = .610"; .450/400 = .613" (From COTW).

It may be possible to use the .348 - at least I'm going to try it. I will also try neck sizing using a .40-70 Sharps Bottleneck die and see what happens.

Sorry to pee on your parade, but this afternoon I found the original Kynoch cartridge I had and tried it in every shell holder I have, including 450 NE, 470/500 NE, 577 Snider, 416 Rigby, 348, 45-70. No dice.

Now the good news. It fit in the 50 Sharps, a trifle loose, but it should work.

SOS

PS . In my experience, the dimensions (and often the verbage) in COTW are frequently incorrect. The more obscure the cartridge, the more likely they are to be wrong.

Well, picked up both the No 1 and the Hawkeye today. And what do I find on the doorstep when I arrive home? The Hornady 450-400 brass from Grafs!

Some observations: The .400 weighs 7.94 lbs which is quite a surprise since my .405 was 8.30. I can't see any difference in the barrel contour so I'm guessing it's all wood density. For comparison a 45-70 is 7.31 and a 7x57A is 6.99.

Both the original Kynoch cartridge and the new Hornady brass chamber and eject nicely. Here's a comparison of rim dimensions.

Kynoch Dia---.616
" " Thickness---.058

Hornady Dia---.617
" " Thickness---.056

Close enough for gov't work. I'll post picks if someone can tell me how to "right click" with a Mac...........?

In talking to Hornady last week, they indicated their brass would not ship until sometime around October. Looking at Graf's site, they show "out of stock" on the same brass. Just curious, have you had your's on backorder for sometime....or do you have some sort of inside track on it?

I ordered it in May. Grafs called last week and asked if I still wanted it.

I wouldn't trust what their website says about anything right now. They seem to be experiencing some IT issues. I tried to input the item code from the catalog for Redding 375 ruger dies and it bounced as an invalid number. So I tried RCBS and Hornady 375 ruger dies. Same result. So I called customer service and told them about it. They said to insert it in the comments section!

Here's my first attempt at pics.
SOS

The rounds are: Kynoch 450-400 3.25", Hornady 450-400 3" case, Kynoch 450-400 3", Kynoch 450 NE, 7.62 ball for reference.
One good thing about the pic is that you can clearly see the difference in rim thickness.

On Gunbroker, select Ammunition, then Rifle Ammo, then type Hornady 450/400 (or just 450/400)in the search box. Should take you straight to it.

I just called them on the phone and ordered a box directly at $69.99 plus $8 S/H. Received it yesterday, but haven't shot it yet.
